• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Object placement advice

Hi,

I currently have a bgl library of just over 100 custom signs, all being placed separately using xml.

Would there be any performance benefit in merging the individual gmax models into one and exporting as a single mdl so there is only one refpoint?

I will also be placing a large amount of 3D taxi edge lights the same way, if it is beneficial.

Many thanks

Phil

Hi,

Some merging might help. But putting all signs of a big airport in one MDL will probably give you less performance. It is a balancing act. Too many object placements hurt performance, but MDL files that cover an entire airport also do.

Too many placements hurt performance because of the overhead of doing each separate placement. But if you have on big MDL than the scenery engine will always have to draw all signs, even those that are not in view, when part of the object is in view. So you need to balance between those two.

In general I try to only group objects that are close together.

Hi Arno,

And I guess putting them all in one mdl will also require some tweaking of the altitude of the objects to ensure they still sit on the ground, due to the curvature of the earth in FSX?

Phil

Hi,

I think so. I never tried such big MDL files in FSX. But I indeed think they would start floating at the edges.
