• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Other boolean question

Hello

I have to realize some semi-circular section hangers.
I succedeed to create with one end closed, and other open (see hang_open pic).

Now I need one with one end closed, but cut with a rectangular open part.
I tried to use the semicircular end (as main part), and a box (as tool) to cut the rectangle as shown on pics; two models, first with rectangle door, not up to top (hang_bool1 pic), second up to top, that would split the end semicercle in two separate parts (han_bool2 pic).

Unfortunately, I get an error message (err_bool pic).
Thanks to explain me a correct way to realize the parts I need.

Other independant question: I realized in separate projects airport terminal and tower; how to get both in a single project?

Thanks for help; Pierrot - FMEP

My preference would be to start a new project and MERGE (File->Merge) the two projects in turn.

Hello!

Thanks for "merge" solution! Quite easy when you know!
So, I can position exactly both buildings.
With IS and slew mode, I didn't succeed in doing it so precisely.

Boolean - Part 1

First Part.
Is this what you are trying to do? Make a doorway in the end wall? See the pics below.
If so then this is what to do.
The object you see has an outside and an inside - copied and pasted onto itself. To do a boolean on each part you must separate them and work on them separately.
It is important that the doorway is named as 'tool' otherwise nothing will work. Make a box with the appropriate measurements then position it over the end wall as you have in the hang_bool1 pic. Choose the part that you want to cut the doorway from and make it the current part. Press F3 and choose both parts. Press Ctrl+B and cut out the doorway. Press F3 again and choose both parts with tool in the name from the left side and select them - also choose/select the part which has bool2 in the name. On the right side you should have 5 parts - these are the parts you will delete. On the left you should have 2 parts - the part with bool1 in the name and the 2nd part which you haven't touched and which, I say again, must be separated from the other parts - I normally move it with the Transform/Translate option to a position say 50 feet away on the x axis.
Having pressed the delete key you should now have your doorway cut out of the end wall.
Repeat the operation for the part you moved away.
For the graphics side you will need to make the inside part slightly smaller then the outside part so that the textures do not coincide with each other. You will need to move the points of the doorway of the inside so that they match up with the outside part.
Hope this helps.
Question.
When you separate the tube into 2 parts what do you intend to put in the middle between them? A wall? Please explain a little bit more.

Hello
Thanks for answer.
I think that boolean problem was caused by the fact the main part was just a double-faced polygon, without depth.
Instead of using half "flat" disk, I used a half cylinder for wall, with 5cm depth and it works.

However, this method creates many polygons (triangles): about 20 on each face of wall!

I tried another methode with extrusion.
For the model with 2 separate sides (door up to bottom), I create a template (nearly quarter of circle , suiting the curve, and extrude it 5cm to create the side wall part; then clone and symetry. See pics _hang_side and hang_1. I'm now ok with this type.

I tried tu use similar methode with second type (wall cut with door as yours); I create the template (pic templ1), and tried to extrude it 5cm. Unfortunately, as I had allready noticed (H- shaped beams), FSDS seems to have trouble to extrude non convex templates; results seems to be the convex hull (pic extrud1), without the cut door.
Did you encounter similar extrusion problem with non-convex template? As an other part, FSDS correctly manages non-convex templates with Sweep mode.

Sorry for "moire" effect (I don't know english word) due to tole texture in pics.

Thanks for help!

Hi Pierrot,
I have never used the template feature in FSDS, I can't really see the point but I am sure that Felix will explain if it is necessary.
I make all my objects directly in FSDS - I use v3 as I have FS9 not FSX. I just try to cut out extra polygons if it is possible particularly with curved buildings.
I've attached a pic for you to see. The doorways are cut out very similar to what you are trying to do. Both the front and back of the hanger have a doorway cut out of them. The windows are see-through as well.
If I wanted to make it wider then I would use the point mode and stretch it as much as I wanted to.
Hope you understand what I mean.

Hello
Thanks for answer.

- did anybody encountered same problem for extrusion of non convex templates? is there really an impossibility in FSDS?

- did anybody encountered problem of modification of dimensions with sweep mode (the template dimensions 15 cm are small vs radius 14m).

Thanks for help.
