• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Painting Suggestion

Hi, i'm a beginner in fsds modeling, and have managed to produce a model. I was planning to make it a scenery object, but i do not know how to paint or texture it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Here is a picture of the model:

If you have pictures to transfer to the parts, it's a little more complicated, but you can paint it as follows:

1. Create different color materials Edit>Manage Material List>Add.

2. Assign different materials to each part Edit>Part Properties>Material.

Like anything else, you need to read the Help and Tutorials available for FSDS...

Bill is correct. The most time consuming and most detailed is finding and/or making a good dds, or bmp. I am trying to find a good picture of a military ambulance WW II, a direct front-end shot. Everyone posts pictures at an angle, which makes it difficult to get a good bmp from.

Good searching is a must, and good techniues in Paint Shop Pro or Adobe or the like is a must. (which I'm not so hot at either! :) )

After finding a good picture make it a bmp or dds, open up a program called dxtbmp, and save as dxt1, 3, or 5. 5 is the least compressed (bigger) but better quality. Put this texture into a folder where you can easily access it. Call it up to apply all or various parts of it to your object in FSDS, OR go to poly mode, click on poly, then texture, then custom circle, then texture properties. Drag the lines with handles (sometimes kind of hard to grab the handles (go to 200% makes it a bit easier to see them), and the handles around the part of the texture you want to use. Might have to fuss with it to the texture doesn't look wiggley.

There's a lot more... a lot more! Let me know if you wish further help. Bill L and n4gx are some of the many giants on whose shoulders we stand! :) Extremely knowledgeable, very helpful.

BTW- You're design looks great. I might suggest using more sections for your tires... 15 or 16 so they look rounder. True this increases the poly count, but You are building a good looking missle launcher, not building for a 386 computer with 512k memory! Hahaha! :) Bob

Thanks for the advice!!
I have one more question.

On the picture in my first post, the tires are becoming transparent. I tested this out in fs2004, and saw that the tires were becoming transparent. transparent meaning that the side does not show. Can anyone help he with this problem??

If you applied a texture to the sides of the tires and the texture is missing from the appropriate texture folder, they will appear transparent in FS.

In fs9 it should show as default gray. Odd! Anyway. For now make a tire current part. Now- in any window just right click and click on currant item properties. Then materials. now- click add- on top it says new color. type in any name you want, click on the first box named diffuse. choose a color for the tire. say ok.

Do this for the other tires, and other parts if you want. Compile and check it out. Later on we can fiddle with textures.

Was going to cover that next. The texture has to be in the same active folder as the bgl or mdl -library-bgl. If not then the bgl in addon scenery/scenery and the texture in addon scenery/texture.

Or if in FSX and you have accel or sp2a or 3 and you chose a bmp in FSDS and added the.n to it...... and you forgot to make an LM copy of it - blank, transparent. nothing at all! I did that once. Was I surprised to see many windows in my building but no walls! Boy and howdy! hahahaha! Bob

I tried it but still no success. I guess a picture would be helpful then a whole paragraph.

The problem is that one side of the truck is showing, but the other side is not. Any tips on solving this problem?
Good side:

Bad Side:

Is your truck a closed volume? - in other words... it DOES have the end polygon modeled?

Without knowing better, one thing could be that you used an open ended cylinder with which to make the cabin, so it has a 'closed' right side, but open left side.

IF that's the case,.

1. if it's still a structured cylinder, go into cross section mode (<F9>) cycle to that last section and then go to Cross Section->Make Polygon.

2. or go into point mode <F8> and click-select each end point in order to create a polygon (CTL-P go to Polygon->MAke polygon from selected points)

If you already have a polygon there (or from alternative 2, above you still can't see the end) so, then you've flipped a polygon - most probably the end polygon. Go to polygon mode <F7> tehn click on menu item view->Voew surface normals. click select that end polygon (by clicking on the faint white polygon normal) which you should see pointing "inwards" with the polygon selected (it turns green in the view windows) select polygon->flip (or just press "f" . If the problem was a flipped polygon then you should now see the polygon facing out/cab end "closed"

When I saw this I knew immediately the problem. Study what Felix just wrote. If it is still confusing, get onto Skype, look for me, I'll add you. Send me your fsc file and while both of us are on Skype we will go to fullscreen mode so you can see what I am doing. It will be a good learning experience.

This is also covered in the FSDS help articles. Polys turned around the wrong way often happen, sometimes not your fault at all. Stuff happens... as in Forest Gump. :)

Give Felix's shot a try and report back. Bob

Thanks to Felix for giving me a solution! Also, thanks Bob for helping me out. It did work! Thank you all very much!

No Problem. We're the family here. If you have Skype (it is free), do a search for jyarddog. I'll get the notice and we can connect there. If we can't figure it out we'll ask the giants here! :) Bob
