• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello i have a very interesting problem on one of my models. when i fished boolening the second hanger bay on a project im working on part of the hanger disappeared when looking though it, but when i switch views it appears solid. if this is hard to understand see the pictures. if you look at the front view you will see that the by on the left is solid where as the one on the right is not. Any suggestions. Attached is the gmax file as well

That's because you don't have any polys to form the interior to the right hand bay. Whether the boolean removed them completely or whether they weren't there before I couldn't say.

A simpler method?

I was at a loose end, so here you go.

I've deleted all the internal polys of box01, cloned the exterior as box02 and resized it so the door openings are the same size, but the roofline is slightly lowered and the sides brought together a little. This gives an interior for the hangar, so box02 is then converted to editable mesh and the polys flipped. The dividing interior wall is a third box, box03. All this is found in Hangernotemp01.gmax.

Selecting box01, I then Attached box02 so interior and exterior are one object. The hangar doorways are then completed by creating 6 polys between interior and exterior - 2 sides and a top for each doorway - Hangernotemp02.gmax

The dividing interior wall is then made a part of the hangar by selecting box01 and Attaching box03 - Hangernotemp03.gmax

You'll notice there are only polys where they can be seen, so the bottom of the walls are open, as are the ends of the dividing wall. The Pivot is also centered on the building at ground level: you may or may not want to move this again - I know nothing about scenery design myself! (but I do know enough about gmax not to fear the dreaded Boolean!) :)

Hope this helps.

Boolean works, no reason to avoid it. Just don't expect your model to contain an interior after using boolean. When needed, just build your own interior.

What would I use instead of Boolean?

You could just cut the doorways out with some Slice modifiers (or Slice Plane), but as bob says there's no reason to not use Booleans. It's just easier to build the interior once you have the exterior done - we aircraft modellers usually do the same.

Be prepared to tidy up the mesh once you've used a Boolean or a Slice modifier - weld excess vertices together etc.
