PayPal is a SCAM

Do not use it!

I sent my friend £215 via paypal so he could order some items for me.
The order went fine, the company got the money and confirmed the order.
Roughly one hour later, the company sent me an email saying order is on hold due to "Awaiting Payment"...this company confirmed the order and said it would be with me tomorrow.
At the same time, PayPal sent me an email saying they THINK there has been suspicious activity on my account, I appealed against this and done what they asked me to do and sent them what they asked me to send, this included a photo of me, with my photo ID (drivers license) and my bank card next to my face. After I sent these, I rang PayPal, asked what was going on, the women said they thought there was some suspicious activity in my account, but since I rang them, they will clear it and things should be back to normal.
Being abit happy, I waited, only for one hour later getting an email from them saying they have suspended my account, I rang them again to inform them what happened and what I was told etc, they hung up on me. I rang again and the man said my account has been locked, I asked when it will be unlocked and if I could make a new account, he said I will no longer be able to use the PayPal service, a lifetime ban!

This isn't it, I tried to transfer £70 from my paypal to my bank account, this takes between 2-3 days so I waited, minutes later, PayPal REVERSED this and put that £70 back into my PayPal balance, and then told me I have to wait 180 days, 6 months until I can get this money.... considering they have banned me for life, for nadda!

This still isn't it, the £210 I sent to my friend to make my order for me, the order where the company confirmed it and said it will be with me tomorrow, but PayPal took that £210 from the company or blocked the transaction and took it, and also took another £225 for my friends paypal account to be in the -£255 zone!

That's £420 paypal has taked, along with the £75 they will not let me touch until now september!

Also, they said it's interest free! the amount of interest PayPal will earn from me in 6 months, i get nothing.

To make some of you better understand this, heres a list of what happened:

PayPal limits my account
I sent friend £215 to make my order
My friend makes my order, as I was sitting next to him!
The order is all okay, confirmed it with me, will be with me tomorrow
----okay, thats fine, job done-----............. NOPE
I transfer £70 to my bank account
PayPal intervenes the transaction and takes the £205
Company where my order came from, got nothing
PayPal REVERSE my transfer of £70 to my bank account and put back into PayPal
My friends PayPal balance is now -£205, it was £0.00 before I sent him the money, and was £10 after he made the order, which I gave to him for doing me a favour.
I do all what they ask to appeal
Appeal denied, account closed, not allowed to appeal
Told me I need to wait 6 months to get my £70 from my now, banned for lifetime account.

Leaving me £285 short, my friend £205 in the red, and probably no package tomorrow.

This is all because PayPal THOUGHT there were suspicious activity on my account, and really they STILL not decided to lift my limits and in result banned me for life, still holding £70 of mine whilst my friend is £205 in the red, and not a clue where the £205 is which we and the company thought was in their hands now for my order, obviously PayPal got in somewhere between that transaction and took it....... £410 missing, thanks, PayPal

DO NOT USE PAYPAL! if you have to, send whoever money directly from your bank account to their bank account, takes up to 3 days for this, but rather 3 days wait of a smooth transfer rather than paypal screwing everything up.
Since now, even if offered, I will never return to PayPal, they are scammers, and done this to alot of people, interest free, cause of this, I can no longer by most addons for MS since most company use PayPal...stay away from it, use something else!

PayPal, they guarentee us a service, in which they suspect is suspicious, which results in either a limited account or a lifetime ban. Which then defeats the whole purpose of their service. If this has never happened to you, believe me, it will happen.

I will be again phoning PayPal tomorrow to assure them nothing is suspicious etc and demand my money back from them, and the £400+ they have taken, thats getting my friend out of the red zone and the money they took during my order, I will keep everyone informed as to what happens with all of this, if they don't do nothing, I will be getting a lawyer and solicitor against them, aswell as notifying Watchdog.

PayPal is a scam, not friendly, you've been warned!

Sadly, I've heard PayPal do this before. It's almost become their M.O. now. But, since they are so big, people will keep using them, and thus they'll continue this.

It needs to be stopped, and people such as EBay and any other website that use PayPal need to listen in to all of this stuff and cut PayPal off alltogether, I'm sure they are performing many illegal actions with peoples money

I've used Paypal for almost a decade now and never had one single problem. I'm not saying they don't happen, just it's never happened to me...

Count yourself lucky, sorry, but it probably will soon... they think its suspicious or "fraud" that ive been receiving few payments of £280, sending out £200, and sending out little parts of £50 etc.... I have never had £1000 in paypal balance!

I gave them everythign they asked for but nope, still suspicious and fraud!

I am fortunate in not having problems so far. My wife, on the other hand, ended up in a similar situation and will now not use PayPal any more.

Well, I have rang PayPal up again, basically, the money I sent to my friend is going to eventually be sent back to my PayPal account, but I will not be allowed to touch this for 180 days, they will probably consider sending it back to me after 90 days.

When I questioned them about my friend negative balance, they said his balance will remain negative even when I have the £215 back!

I then got in touch with the Police, they said they can not do anything about my case, they can only do something if PayPal doesn't give me my money after 180 days.
I asked the Police in regard to my friend, they said my friend will need to ring paypal and see if he is able to sort it with paypal, but, paypal HAVE to reset his balance so it's out of the red, and if they do not, my friend will need to contact the police, which will then have a fraud case taken out against PayPal and get them scamming theives sued.

Hopefully, with the amount of people that have reported stuff like this, people will get the idea that PayPal is not safe and secure, except a scam to pick on random people at their will, to ban their account, whilst earning interest from peoples money for 180 days, and probably giving it them back interest free.

Its a deffinate no from me to ever use Pay Pal even if they did say I could join their "service" again, they should be thanking me for my service, and everyone elses service they have decided to ban earning interest from it.

From now, I will only purchase things or do work for someone if the payment goes from their bank to my bank, directly, and work would begin when I see that payment in my bank account.

I will still keep you posted as to what happens with my friends balance

PayPal has always been a scam. The guy who founded PayPal was made absurdly, filthy rich off of closing a lot of accounts without cause long before it was sold to eBay.

There were several class action suits against PayPal in that time... and in the short... PayPall got away with fraud on a scale that is hard to believe. There are no regulations to protect consumers who use what is termed an 'online bank'. No regulations that restrict what the 'bank' can and can not do.

As far as I know paypal will assume that your transaction is fraudulent if you receive large amounts of money and immediately transfer to another paypal accounts, it will be regarded as a money laundry. Well ... I first learned about paypal because Indonesia had to blacklist it. My advice if you receive a big money then leave it overnight and then continue transfer on the following day.

:p

Good reasons not to use it. I don't.

There is something called Amazon Payment, that might be a better way to transfer money. Amazon is pretty reputable.

I do not use PayPal, as I have also had problems with them.

But, for the sake of keeping a peaceful forum, it would be a good idea to tone down the level of rage expressed in the forum.

Nothing wrong with warning others of problems related to online payments... it does relate to FS development. But it is important to keep an adult level of civility in discussions. I realize it's unlikely to find a PayPal admirer on the forum, but ranting or trolling for a response to something we cannot possibly fix is just endless ranting or trolling.

The topic of the thread is very good. The tone of the resulting posts is something less.

It is worth noting that 180 days is something of an "industry standard". For example, a a credit card charge-back can be requested up to 180 days after the transaction. This means that, once there is a dispute, there's a reluctance to settle at once in case of subsequent claims.

I have never had a problem with PayPal but I have had lots of phishing emails purporting to come from them :p

One should always check the origins of emails.

Ive never had a problem with PP and the entire FS biz world seems to run in PP exchanges, payroll payouts, royalty payments, etc. I have never heard of something like this happening.

Sorry that this happened.

Just came off the phone again to paypal, it seems now they are realising their mistake and restoring my account since they have had all my details etc etc including websites, full explanations etc.

When I told the women I was speaking to earlier "it defeats the purpose of me signing up with paypal in the first place" now they realise it etc, so hopefully, all gets resolved

I have used Paypal for a very long time already and have not experienced this problem. Though I have had my fair share of stories with people having this problem which seems to have been their mode of operation for some time now. I don't think that they do it on purpose but it is really sad that they have to lock up your account which has a lot of funds in it. I just hope that they keep things real next time, or if ever there will be that next time.

Well, the recieved my story of what happened with the payments i have sent and received.

I sent them scans of my DVLA Driving License ID, Bank card, DVLA counterpart, letter from Police when I applied, letter from the British Army, and all the letters I got from my motorcycle insurance. Along with confirmation from my friend who I sent money too and the reason why, my website URL and business email and also links to threads where I have been sharing pictures of my scenery work. I also told them to check my website address on whois.com which again confirmed my name and address etc.

They still feel it's too risky

What more do they f***ing want?!?! they have enough ID and proof to even change their identity so they become me!

I only wanted to purchase an engine and exhaust for my motorcycle which I have only just got (first motorbike) and to also pay for my full motorbike license! I have only passed the CBT which gives me 2 years to do my full test, which runs out this June, PayPal is not giving me my money for 180 days (6 months) considering they have banned me for life from using their awful service.

Now I will have to cancel my insurance, re-do my licenses, then get re-insured.
