Hey all,

I just created an animated photoreal fire effect and before i release it just wanted to know if some are willing to check it out and add any comments before i release it. Basically i made it for a bush scenery addon on or perhaps for lighting runways or even campsites. Any help would be appriciated as i'll post it up if anyone is interested. Thanks in advance.

Nice one. :)

Personally, I think it sontains too much smoke or should have more black-white smoke. In your fx it seems to be something between smoke and fire-beam. I've seen this a lot in other sceneries/screenshots and don't find it very realistic.

Take a look at this:

feuer.jpg

No beam at all, practically no smoke (as this can't be seen at night).

Hey Thorsten,

Thanks for replying. I was try to create a glow from the fire which would be reflected off of the smoke near the top of the barrel..also to better see it a bit more from a distance without creating a huge effect. I'll post the the file here if anybody wants to use it.

I think it turned out great..The first thing I noticed was the red glow at the bottom fading into the smoke..looks like an oily black smoke barrel fire..graet work..and make more..

Thanks noshades,

Im just making a couple of adjustments to it and will release the final version. Its my first attempt at using the animation portion of the effect. If you got any ideas to add to it let me know.

Dave

Great work mate

Not sure where Thorston gets the idea you can not see
smoke at night

Why dont you make a couple more.

A small Tiki Light would be great.
That would not have much smoke
as they are usually gas ( real gas not petrol :D )

Maybe a campfire ,some smoke and sparks

And a really BIG long bushfire with sparks

Thanks Tas,

My next one will be a small campfire..probably start it later today. I was thinking about adding the sparks to this one but rather save it for the campfire one. I'll make one for a Tiki as well. Just need to find some new textures to use for the fire.

As for the forest fire though, I even thought about that but was uncertain how it would come out and the framerate issue. I'll probably give it a shot and see what happens. Basically right now, i really dont know with the next edition of fs coming out that if sceneries created now will be compatible with it which makes me hesitant to create any new sceneries until we know for sure...so im just going to make simple objects like the fire one for now or if anybody needs help creating effects.

As far as the smoke issue, it really depends on what fuels the fire. The image i came across that gave me the idea for it seem to be fueled by oil or gas...which will create a smoke. I think what thorsten i saying is true that if a small campfire that is fueled by wood...you might not see that much smoke where as a large brush fire you will dfenitly see the glow of the fire reflecting off the smoke.

One of the things i changed with the fire i made was the size of the smoke to where you wont see it when flying but if your next to it you will see a small amount which will keep the small glow. I also changed the smoke to a darker color as you might only see it with a lighter background. I was thinking also to add and a part to the effect which will illumnate on the ground(as you would see at a campfire).

I agree...I just that website couple hours ago....got some nice pictures. Just deciding now on how im going to go about creating the scenery with some night textures for the glowing logs...putting some stones around the fire and creating a texture during the day with the burnt out logs.

Hello,

ablitos i was going to make fires like tat but i couldent be bothered because im not the best with doing these effects but i like doing them hopefully i will get the hang of things soon.

Anyway the reason i wanted to post a reply to this topic is because i seen you were looking for fire textures well i can offer you some fire textures i made in paint shop pro i only have one done at this time it's a sort of fireball but i am working on somemore.

If you are interested in these textures i will be happy to send you a copy of them.

Good luck :)

There is already a forest fire effect. It's part of the MS effects SDK.
fx.ForestFire.

Hello,

It looks ok from a distance but not close.

How did you apply alpha to that fire texture with the barrel fire?
I cant seem to apply alpha to an texture. What tools do i need?
And how do you do it?

Thank's in advance.

Oh also this is a couple of screen shots of my campsite and fire its still in the eirly stages but im working on it.:D

First i found 4 images, used microsoft paint to get rid of the background stuff i didnt want...so i had the flame against a red background. i repeated that for the other three images. Then combined all 4 images onto one texture sheet. Then i used photoshop to create the alpha channel, resized the image to 256x256. Then converted the image in imagetool to 16 bit(444) then put it into my effects/ texture folder. Arno has a tutorial in which he describes how to create a alpha channel using photoshop which is very useful...Thanks Arno!! I'll look for the link and i'll post it for you.

Here is the link...

I havent got photoshop and i cant get it because im on dial-up 100.0 MB takes me like 2 days to download :(

I have got paint shop pro8 but i dont know how to use the alpha in that. :banghead:

Is it possible to apply alpha to an image with DXTBmp?

i know you can apply a greyscale alpha chanel is that alpha what you use?

Thank's so much for the help.:)

I got another question about Effects parameters:

If i wanted something to be less than 1 meter would i put 0.01 or 0.10 to make .1 of a meter?

I need help with this real quick so i can progress with my effect.

And some examples with useing the uv1 = 0.00, 0.00
and uv2 = 0.00, 0.00 i cant seem to work this out lol.

Thank's in advance.

If 1.00 is meter then 0.10 is .1 of a meter. :D I'm not wuite sure what you mean...

These are the min/max-coordinates (x/y) telling which part of the bitmap the fx uses. 0.00 1.00 and 0.00 1.00 means use the whole bitmap, 0.50 1.00 / 0.00 1.00 is the right half of it.
Have a look at the SDK for this. ;)
