• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello,

I am quite new to scenery design and I come to a few problems I would kindly ask you to help me with.

First, I have come to a larger area and I need to combine more "photos" due to limitation of sbuilder. This is how I started with my problem but it might not be correct. So I have gathered 5 photos of my area and write this inf file:

[Source]
Type = MultiSource
NumberOfSources = 5

[Source1]
Type = BMP
Layer = Imagery
SourceDir = "."
SourceFile = "L17X140960X140987Y93780Y93799.BMP"

NullValue = 255,255,255
SamplingMethod = Gaussian
ulyMap = 45.5024969938972
ulxMap = 13.5791015625
xDim = 5.36441802978714E-06
yDim = 3.76044633103728E-06

SamplingMethod = Gaussian
ulyMap = 45.4909456926274
ulxMap = 13.6175537109375
xDim = 5.36441802978342E-06
yDim = 3.76121768021209E-06

[Source3]

SourceFile = "L17X140960X140987Y93800Y93819.BMP"

xDim = 2.68220901489506E-06
yDim = 1.88123556658648E-06

[Destination]
DestDir = "."
DestBaseFileName = "LJPZ_LC4"
DestFileType = BGL
LOD = Auto
UseSourceDimensions = 1
CompressionQuality = 95

And I thought I will get one bgl which could be loaded with Annotator; but I got just part of the photo in the Annotator - I guess it is just one source (part of the 5 sources).

I have searched a bit and find some topics related to GeoTiff though I have not found any source where I could learn more.

So thank you for any hints, how to solve this or how to take the correct way.

I have checked some payware sceneries and found that they have the whole island in one bgl (600mb) - how did they manage to make it?

-----

The other thing I was wondering; There is LOD11 mesh available for my area. Though I want to add some realism around the airport - quite minor things.

I started with flatten areas (AB_flattern) in sbuilderx though I found out that only up to 3 can be used in one bgl - is that correct? If I used more, the below ones were not shown.

How can I update my mesh with some more details? For example if I overreact, how could I made a new hill near my airport (fictional), just for the learning purposes. Note that I would need to make a lot of them, so just some temporary solutions with polys will not do the trick.

I have tried terra builder though program is not working quite as I would want - do not know if there is a problem with compactibility or something.

So overall, question is how could I update a local mesh with some details and note that I do not have any source available, just with photos and some height details from google earth.

Thank you very much for helping me and re-directing me to some other topics I was not able to find via search.

Klemen,

You can check quickly what images are included in your output BGL by dropping it onto TmfViewer. If you run Resample from a command prompt(instead of dropping your inf onto it) you will be able to see any warning or error messages that were generated. There can be warnings and Resample will still compile what it can. Resample should combine your 5 images into a single BGL. GDAL is another software program that would combine your images into one prior to using Resample. It is available here http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/. I'm sorry I can't answer your mesh questions.

Perhaps you should try:

LOD = Auto,13 as the SDK indicates.

But it seems to me the format is LOD = min,max, therefore maybe try LOD = 13,Auto.

Thank you both for asnwering.

Just to make it clear, in FSX all images showed up though in annotator just one is showm (one source image).

TMFViewer shows all sources of my LC.

Is there maybe any tutorial or some topic about how to cover larger areas with photo real textures? Thank you!

The annotator is probably just showing the highest LOD. Is that the case?

Dick

There are no tutorials that I know of. I'm currently working on doing photo scenery for an airport where I originally got twenty-four 10,000 by 10,000 pixel images(in GeoTiff format they are about 286mb each). In this case I decided that I would use GDAL to create 4 extremely large images that are made up of 6 of the original images. Then I will use Resample to put the 4 together into 1 BGL(this BGL at 90% compression is going to be around 900mb). This gave me 4 images that I could still work on with Gimp. It's just what I thought would be a good way to go about it. Do what you think is best or works with the images you are dealing with. There are limits to the size of images which varies with different formats. GeoTiff or Tiff can be up to 4 gigabytes. This is much bigger than a Bitmap image. A TGA formatted image can be up to 65,000 pixels by 65,000 pixels but GDAL doesn't support this format. IMHO the best way to deal with large images or areas is determined by the images that you start with. Hope this helps.

Hey,

it shows the picture just of the opening screen in LOD13 size, see picture.

Thank you for your help, I guess I will build one big photo as area is not soo big, but I sould make manual inf files (for night and seasons etc) then as sbuilderx can not handle such big photos. Nothing serious then.

I am just puzzelled as I read that you can make out of more photos one big bgl (well it is half true) but I can load it in annotator.

@Ed, but will you be able to load it in annotator for futher work - when combining 4 different photos?

Haven't gotten that far yet. Solving that problem, if it is one, is somewhere in the future. I have read on the forum that loading large files in the annotator makes it go very slow.

Yes I would understand that though I am surprised as I have loaded 600mb file of a whole island withut a problem. That is why I am puzzeled.

So now I am trying to build single photo and this should work. It is still not as big as the whole island and I wont be able to us it in sbuilder but manual compile should work. I just hope photoshop will work.

Thank you for helping, will report how it went.

I have combined all photos in one big bmp and resampler made a great work. Annotator reads the whole file as well.

Thank you all for your thoughts and help!
