• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Point limit in Google Earth?

Hi I've been having some problems with Google Earth lately on a rather complicated coastline I'm working with where large polygons break down after too many points are added. What happens is that the white line between the red dots dissapears and the entire polygon gets messed up. Has any one else experienced this? I was wondering if it was possible to change settings or work around it some other way or if the only way to avoid it is to keep the polys with fewer points =)

All the best and happy new year to all!

/Daniel

I'm not sure whether Google Earth has a limit but I've noticed that the more points in a polygon the slower it becomes.

Instead of doing just one polygon to represent your coastline you could break it down into several polygons.

I try to keep my polygons under 20,000 points each.

How many do you have?

...

The one I had problems with earlier today is "only" about 18000 points and when I checked a couple of others I realized they were over 27000 points so the problem doesn't seem to appear at any specific number of points allthoug I could delay the problem by removing a couple of points...

I tried doing smaller polys and that seems to be better as far as avoiding these kind of problems but my GE has become very unstable... have had over 5-6 crashes after my initial post (various forms of crash to desktop)

Would performance increaese if I removed old projects from the KML listing i GE you think? Been keeping it cause I want to go in and tweak those at a little later stage but I guess I could add them back from the saved KML files later...

Microsoft broke down their poly sizes to QMID11-sized squares. They did this for performance reasons, in part.

We had a discussion about that one time and that's what came away from it.

Probably if you go with polys (such as water polys on coasts) of about QMID-11 size you should be ok. You hit a level of diminishing returns once you get thousands of points going...in other words, in the sim, what's the visual appearance between a poly of 20,000 points vs. a poly of 12,000 points?

Hi Mace, and thanks for the input but my problem isn't with FS, the polys once compiled show up in all their glory in FSX. My problem is that Google Earth constantly crashes, I even tried removing all previous KML files in GE but crashes still happen. I'm starting to wonder if this is a problem for the geografical region I'm working with in Google Earth rather than a KML issue...

Again, all the best and thanks for all your help!

Oh, GE is crashing? Well in that case, I'd like to ask what your machine specs are, (memory, in particular).

My GE has quite a few polys in it, but not massive amounts of points. It might not hurt to delete some of those; I believe you can always load them back in as long as you keep your kml's saved somewhere.

This might sound nuts, but for me, a polygon 'stretch' becomes unusable when it takes about 2-3 seconds per 'point' on a coastline that I am 900 ft altitude from.

I started trying to get a basic poly shape, and then
adding polyline stretches to....

I think that we have gone beyond what the original application was designed for. ;-)

PS - did I say that the 'add line coords to poly shape' tyechnique also breaks down when using a text editor like notepad ;-) It cant cope with 2 Gb text strings (rubbish app says I...... etc)

BTW, who's gonna volunteer to train me to use the new Wacom tablet that came yesterday???

I've had mine for about a month and the only training needed is "use the bloody thing". It's a bit strange at first but has become as easy to use as the mouse ( which is still attached to my machine but now never used) I got mine because I could feel the RSI problem I had a few years ago coming back. I think the use of the pen over the Wacom tablet must be a more natural position for the hand and wrist as the RSI symptoms I was starting to get have now disappeared. :):)

Cheers Tony

The Wacom tablets are great!

If you use Firefox have a look at the "AllInOne Guestures" addon (Firefox\Tools\Addons). It lets you create simple gestures to do things in Firefox like open link in new tab, close tab, scroll down/up etc. Very handy!

I went for a bit of an "overkill" and got the 6x11. One little tip for you, when you set it up select the option for touching the pad to activate the "double click" and "right click" options for the pen button. I started without this and it can make things hard to control if you leave it to activate as soon as you press the button while "hovering" over the tablet.

Cheers Tony

Sounds like you need to break your project up into smaller KML files.
Sounds like you need ot make polys by clicking each one, don't draw with the button pressed, that creates loads of polys where you don't need them- on the straight bits.
