• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi,
I have very little knowledge to effect making. and it is quite difficult to find the document about this.
I have questions to ask:
1. Are there any differences between effect in FSX and FS2004? Any limitation of FSX effect to be used in FS2004.
2. I have explored the texture using for effect in the folder Texture of FS2004. I found that some of the textures are just plain BMP file with alpha channel, not DXTbmp. What is the preference of texture file? Should it use DXT3 in BMP in FS2004 or DXT5 in DDS in FSX? When we need plain BMP file?
Thanks for any answers and informations.

2.: I once tried a DXT5 DDS for use with effects an it did not work at all until I converted it to bmp using imagetool.
You need DXTbmps al long as you want to have mipmaps (e.g. for brightening in distance). If you don't need them you can use the normal one (saves a lot of export work).

Hope this helped,
Dave

I used DXT5 for FSX effect. When I convert my project to FS2004, I use DXT3. I think it should work. But I was wrong, I need to convert them to Extend BMP 32 bit 888-8 using DXTbmp to save. It works just fine now. But I don't know why DXT3 cause problem during Dawn Dusk and Night time.
