• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Like many, I am in the market for upgrading my system to get the most out of FSX. I have read a few posts about different systems and I have a couple questions. I see alot of guys running quad core CPUs and also running Vista instead of XP. Isn't FSX designed to run in XP and therefore Vista isn't necessary or maybe even a drop in performance? Also, I have read that FSX won't use a quad core CPU and that a good fast dual core processor is a better investment...?
Also, what is the latest greatest stick/throttle/pedal combination that everyone is using these days?
 
Of course FSX uses all four cores. There is no real performance difference between XP and Vista. Far more important is how you setup and maintain your system. 64 bit is better.

As far as flying gear...I use CH products yoke, pedals, throttles... Saitek has some really sweet panel modules now that are very affordable..

ps: Bob, I am almost 99% positive that I also read an article that FSX will NOT use all 4 cores... I remember this as I planned on buy a new system with quad core JUST for FS and after reading that article put everything on hold until MS fixed the problems.... Which apparently will never happen now.

FSX does use all cores with the proviso that three of the cores are used only for loading textures:

After loading, the other three cores will be used only on demand loading of textures:

 
That is indeed very cool. I have dual core, and have read on many tips/tricks sites, that you should set FSX to use only one of them. Makes no sense to me, but then again, much about FS makes no sense, or is backwards from logical thinking..hehe

Wish I could figure out HOW to force it to use my cores efficiently like that. Maybe I would get more than 2-5fps in fsx....

Lots of bad info out there. I have watched all four cores work in my sim. That's how I could say all four work.
