• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Re-exporting FS9 models to FSX models

Hi all,

We have created a scenery using the FS2004 gmax. We do have all objects saved in gmax. We want to create the FSX version too. There are some objects that have transparency so they have to be re-exported with FSX gamepack.
What I did, I've opened the object with the FSX gamepack. I have deleted the material in the material editor. I than created an FSX material. Setting all the things like in the example of the oil-rig. I re-applied the material on the object. Exported it w/o any problem. But I have a strange thing. Normaly with FSX material the black alpha should be transparent and the white should be not. (other way round like in fs9) but for me somehow the black alpha has transparency. Why? I do not understand.

Basicaly how would you do a converting from FS9 to FSX if you have the source files?

Thank you for your answer!
Cheers!

Have you set the Framebuffer settings in the FSX material rollout to "Default Transparent" ?

FSX materials are not transparent by default, you need to set the Framebuffer settings and Z-testing to get them to display correctly.

Another option, would be to load the models into ModelconverterX, and change the settings for the transparent materials there.

Thanks for the quick reply. Here is my material setting:

But basicaly how would you convert a scenery for FSX? What is your method?

I make natively for FSX, but if I was converting a complete scenery from FS9

I would load each model into ModelconverterX, and use the built-in default transparent settings that Arno has set up within it (these include the Z-test settings)

Unless you need to edit the geometry, the source files may not even be necessary!
