• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Realistic Carpet?

A mini quest... I wonder what Realistic Carpet would need in PBR settings. Its a difficult call. Bump mapping for the tufts, zero reflection, zero metal? zero this and that, tons of NORMAL bumping... But its just not enough....

Bill... of the quite strange, massively huge eyebrow people...

Although I make all my textures from my photos, with PBR added via Materializer/hand edits, it helps with some materials to see how others do it on a texture site like textures.com. You don't need to download the textures as all maps are displayed on the site. Ok, they all use a Height map, which doesn't help us, but this does give me a starting point.

Good idea!

What type of carpet? Shag? Lol!
My original paint scheme Learjet LJ24b had orange shag carpet, lolol... Those were the days. You bought plastic carpet rakes for it to fluff it because it tended to mash down like grass...

Definitely Zero (pure black) for metalness (Blue channel of the metal texture) and very high values for roughness, almost white (meaning very little reflection, Green channel of the metal texture), use an ambient occlusion texture to add some fine detail. I suggest finding a top down view photo of a carpet that resembles yours and use Materialize to play around with the settings until you find something that suits your needs

A 3 minute attempt for a shag carpet material - something like this?

Very nice, Fabs!

I experimented with this last year and found that without specular, you have nearly no way to see the 3-dimensionality of the surface. You need a bit of light, but the specular seemed to make it look like plastic.
