• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Retrieving INF file

Not sure what happened, but I apparently have the wrong INF file for a map I'm doing. I either didn't make a BGL or I did another map and that INF took over the one that I wanted. Anyway, I do have the coordinates from the txt file and calibrated the image map back on SBX, but when I try to compile a BGL it says that I don't have an item selected when I did indeed selected it. Any thoughts?

HI Chris:

Be certain that you have properly 'selected' the map within the SBuilderX work-space.

A way to do this is zoom out until the entire map or background image can be seen within the SBuilderX work-space, then with the pointer tool, Click and Hold down the Left Mouse button, and drag a 'selection' frame around that map or background image.

The poly-line border of the map or background image should then turn Green, and the vertices along the perimeter of that border should turn Red. :pushpin:

You should then have something 'selected' that will enable you to compile a BGL.;)

PS: Be careful when naming MAPs for downloaded photoreal background aerial imagery, as SBuilderX defaults to using "Photo01", and in some cases could over-write a prior set of BMP and TXT files if you forget to re-name subsequent and different MAP objects. :alert:

Hope this helps ! :)

I thought I did that, but I'll try again. Also the BMP that I calibrated is named something other that "Photo_1". Didn't know if that mattered.

Hi Chris:

OK, after thinking over your posts, and your use of the term "MAP", you are using the background image directly from the SBuilderX work-space, rather than via the Add Map > From Background feature in the menus system.

Your present work-flow apparently is what Luis Feliz-Tirado refers to as "A quick and simple method" (Method #1) in his tutorial:

Make photo-real ground textures

sendfile.php

File Description:

It is very easy to create your very own high-resolution, custom (photo-real) ground textures. This document explains the concepts and techniques and illustrates the use of SBuilderX with which you can quickly and easily download aerial images and make this type of scenery. So, why hesitate? Make Flight Simulator scenery as real as it gets! Very sorry - no support of any kind is offered. Please do not write. For any questions, please post in the Avsim Scenery Design Forum.

"Making custom textures

SBuilderX will create custom ground directly from the background image. There are different methods:

1. A quick and simple method - SBuilderX will take the images in the present work-space and automatically convert them into a custom ground bgl.

The SBuilderX work-space is 1792 x 1280 pixels in size and that will be the extent of the custom ground, although the resolution will depend on the zoom level of the background.

SBuilderX will also apply a simple blend mask that will blend the custom ground into the default textures along a thin band on the edge of the image.

To create custom ground textures by this method, right-click on the SBuilderX work-space:

upload_2017-10-28_12-10-52.jpeg

Select the "Background ..." option to get this window:

upload_2017-10-28_12-11-17.jpeg

You will have 2 options: either immediately compile the custom ground from the workspace, or save that workspace as a GeoTIFF image file.

By selecting "Compile", SBuilderX will launch the Microsoft Resample program and create the custom ground bgl:

upload_2017-10-28_12-11-48.jpeg

The compiled bgl will be placed in the SBuilder X\Tools\Work folder. Once your custom ground file has been created, you can change the name of the bgl to something more descriptive."

Terrain Design

sendfile.php
File Description:
Terrain Design for Flight Simulator X

This simple illustrated document explains the basic concepts in Flight Simulator X terrain, and how to change them using SBuilder for FS X. Make new water bodies, roads, vehicle traffic, airport flattens, remove autogen, add more detail - anybody can do it easily and quickly.
My most sincere apologies - I am unable, for lack of free time, to offer support of any kind. For questions or problems, please post in the Avsim scenery design forum.

Using the Autogen Annotator

sendfile.php
File Description:
The Autogen Annotator is a powerful tool for modifying the autogen of default ground textures or adding autogen to custom (photo-real) ground. This document illustrates the use of the tool, and includes a pictorial guide to all autogen object types. Very sorry - no support of any kind is offered. Please do not write. For any questions, please post in the Avsim Scenery Design Forum.

Workflow:

File/ Add Map
From Disk
Select the BMP I want
"You may need to calibrate this bitmap"
Copy and past the right coordinates from the TXT file into the coordinates
Go to Location
Copy/Paste my Lat and Long
The image I want is there
Show Background shows that the image is the right size and in the right location
Click drag select image
BGL compile
What you have seen on the video.

I have transferred the image and txt file to the work folder and the same happens.

I suggest following closely the instructions for Method #2 ...in that same tutorial cited above: ;)

"2. The second method for creating custom ground textures - you can select the precise area for which you want custom ground, SBuilderX will make it into a "Map" (with its own calibration text file), and that "Map" can be selected and compiled into a bgl. The Map can also be edited to correct colors, add transparent areas, or as a basis for creating blend masks and water masks."
