• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Rotating animation don´t show in FS9

Hi friends,

it´s me once agai with my animated wind turbine.

In Gmax the blades are with rotating animation and in Gmax the animation shows as it should be and everything is okay.

When I export the file and place it in FS9 the object shows but without animation.

Yes, the animated part ist named tick18_propeller. I´m using the FS2004 SDK and FS2004.

I attache the original Gmax file as I designed it. If anybody has time and will have a look on it and maybe has an idea why the animation dont´shows up in FS???

I don´t know what I did wrong...

Thanks a lot with Greetings
Bob

Simple mistake. You can NOT "animate" a [Group]...

Instead, UnGroup, rename cone Cylinder02 to tick18_spinner, and animate 360 degrees from 0 to 100.

Then, either Link the three blades to the tick18_spinner, or Attach them to tick18_spinner. Either way will work.

Hi Bill,

thanks a lot for your reply.

I just came home from work and tried immediatly what you´ve wrote.

First I did it as you wrote with my own gmax model (to learn how it should be done) and exported the wind turbine to realize that it don´t work in FS2004.

At least I tried the gmax model that you attached original without changing anything, nothing else than export and it don´t work either.

Is there anything I overlooked and forget to do? No, I did export it like many other models too... my face is a big question sign...

Have you an idea?

Hi Bill,

it´s me once again.

I played around and tried to find out what´s wrong.

This time I animated just only the spinner and exported it - and it don´t work either.

So there must be something I overlooked or forgot to do or anything else...

I can´t explain it to myself...

Okay, my apologies for not testing myself.

The problem is that there is a "Scale" applied to the tick18_spinner object. The "Scale error" is killing the animation! :(

Select the tick18_spinner object, click on the Hierarchy tab, and then click on "Scale" to remove the improper scaling.

Also, click on Affect Pivot only, and rotate the pivot so the blue arrow points to the rear of the tick18_spinner object. Rotation will always happen on the "blue axis."

Now export your revised source as a Scenery Model, edit the .xml file and compile to .bgl using bglcomp.exe.

I've tested it in both FS9 and FSX and it appears properly animated near 34R at KSEA as expected.

Here is the compiled .bgl file placed at 34R at KSEA, as well as the corrected .gmax source file.

Hurray...it works!!!!!

So I made all the steps that you mentioned with my gmax model (to learn...you know...) and now it works great.

Thousand thanks to you Bill, you´re a genius!

Tomorrow I will design this wind turbine once again from the very first step til the end to understand what has happened and to understand the solution so that this mistake will never happen again.

One little question at the end: why should I set the animation to 100 instead of 200? what is the difference or the result? Because until today I always set the animation to 200 as I read it in a tutorial (with hangar doors) and it always worked...?

Many thankd once again!

Bob, with tick18_xxx you can make the animation track any length you want. The only difference will be the speed at which it rotates!

0-50 frames will rotate twice as fast as 0-100 frames.

Playback is ~18 frames per second, so 0-100 frames = 5.555 seconds/revolution

Hi Bill,

thanks a lot for your explanation and your help.

Now I understand some things much better than before.

Have a nice week and many greets!!!
