• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

UPDATE:

Some new options are now available to the FS Developer using native Sketchup SKP file versions that are newer than ones installed version.

Whereas Sketchup SKP file versions changed with nearly each numeric version since at least 5.x, versioning reportedly stops with 2021.

Thus, Sketchup SKP file versions 2022, 2023, and 2024 are now reportedly interchangeable, and can be directly Opened in any of those (3) installations.

Many of us prefer to work with the free desktop Sketchup Make which reads / writes 2017 SKP file versions.

If we wish to Open a Sketchup SKP file version that is older, we can easily do so, with a caution that if we Save into that file, it is updated non-reversibly to the numeric version which we have installed and are using to Open the file.

But if we wish to Open a Sketchup SKP file version that is newer, we can not easily do so.

And if we wish to Save a Sketchup SKP file version that is older, we also can not as easily do so.

To work around this, we can install either- or all of- the following plugin Ruby scripts to inter-convert SKP files for most of the Sketchup versions FS Developers may install / use, as well as the now more limited mix of numeric SKP file formats available for download via 3D Warehouse:

Eneroth3 / Open Newer Version

SketchUp plugin for converting and opening models made in a newer version of SketchUp.

For more info about the C++ programs used in this extension, see cpp/README.md.

Requirements: SketchUp 2014+ / Windows 64 bit

Supports SketchUp models from versions up to 2019. For each new major SketchUp version the C++ program in this extension needs to be updated to use the new SDK, supporting that version.

IIUC, as of 2022, author Christina Eneroth reportedly has updated this plugin to work compatibly with Sketchup versions through 2022 - 2024:

I’ve finally had the time to update the extension! Now 2022 and (hopefully) all other versions released in a near future should be supported.
Sorry for the delay.

NOTE: This plugin may still be under revision, and the associated Extension Warehouse page offers this disclaimer:

"Please note, due to some technical issues in this plugin I recommend using Eneroth Legacy Save instead."

Eneroth3 / Legacy Save

This extension quickly saves the model in a legacy SketchUp version. In contrast to utilizing the native Save As... command you don't need to accept the file location and confirm overwrite on each save.

If you have colleges stuck in older versions or want your files to be accessible using SketchUp Make, which stopped being developed after version 2017, you may find this extension useful.

If the file is already saved, this command will function similarly to the native Save command, and save the file to the same location as the same SketchUp. If the file has already been saved to a newer version than you want to save as, first use native Save As and select what version you want to use.

Activated from File > Save in Legacy Format.

NOTE: Not a "plugin" Ruby script, but a stand-alone utility to be Run with Administrative permissions from a Shortcut and/or CMD prompt.

Hope this helps ! :)
