• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SAMM - how to create FSX static model using aircraft for 2004/FSX

Re: 'the static model name/version is (still) too long':
- In 'Aircraft', Do not change the name of the Title and ignore the warning;
- In ' Static Model' shorten the name.
That is it, you're done.

Thanks for the suggestion HOWEVER it makes NO difference - I still cannot save to a library. I get the error message again as soon as I click on Make Library.

BUT

I just discovered that if I select one of the other aircraft (in the same group of aircraft - there are 5 different) which ONLY has one model/texture (so the TITLE is prefilled) I do NOT get the error message. VERY strange.
Anyway it's not the exact aircraft 'series' I wanted (it is the PBY-5A and not the PBY-6A) it will do.
So unless Don wants to have a look maybe I will put this "to bed".

I do not have this problem. Perhaps it is a bug that crept into a newer version of SAMM (mine is 2.2.03)?

I also am using that version (2.2.03).
Remember the error only occurs with one or two of my installed aircraft.

I now have another question and rather than start a new post I will ask here and hope someone who knows reads it and replies.

Of all (the 5 different) aircraft I have made in to static models only one displays with the cockpit lit and pilots (faces) displayed. The other 4 just display with black cockpit windows.
Any reason for this? Is there a work around?

Hello,

I think I recall that the issue with the blackened cockpit windows relates to some FS9 glass textures which were not compatible with FSX. I think I resolved the issue by simply swapping it with a glass texture that did work.

You said you have one aircraft that shows the glass, so try using the glass texture from that one. You may need to rename it to the title of the texture you are replacing, and you may need to re-convert the aircraft as well.

Cheers
Gman

Thanks Gman,

It's not a big issue as the blackened cockpit can't be seen until you get close. I was just interested into why it happens. Now I know.
Thanks again

John

My email address is at the end of the user manual. Or, you can attach the aircraft folder (I only need the texture causing the problem) to a post.

Don

Hi Don,

Just attempted to email you the aircraft folder compressed to a .rar file (around 50mb) and it failed (too large).
Created a separate .rar file containing only the model and texure (20mb) and that was too large also.
Not sure what the mimit is and if that would prevent sending even single file compressed.

Unless you can advise how I can do it I am glad to forget about the problem (as I was able to create a static model of the type 5A aircraft).

Regards

John

. That's why I said I only needed the one texture. I don't need the .air file either. That should reduce the file size to no more than a couple MB.

Don

Thanks Don,

Not sure if you realize that just one texture (folder) creates a .rar of 9MB as the textures are type DDS files.
Anyway I have just attempted to email to you a file containing ONE texture folder and the aircraft.cfg file (23Kb) nd it seems to have been sent successfully

Must be a very detailed texture. In any case, I have received the files and will look at it when I get a chance. But, please understand, I'm vacationing in the South pacific and am now running on "island time".

John, the archive file you sent does not include the model folder or any mdl files. Without them there's nothing I can do.

Hi Don,

Have a really great holiday forget about SAMM until you return home.

I misunderstood a previous reply when you said "That's why I said I only needed the one texture. I don't need the .air file either." in response to my statement that I could not fit files into a .rar small enough to send.

I will send another .rar containing the model folder and sound folder (5Gb)

John

I am able to duplicate your issue with the files I have received. I'll try to determine the problem tomorrow.

Don

John, the explanation for your situation is at the bottom of page 5 of the use manual.

The developer of the aircraft has chosen to use VERY long names for the textures - in a couple cases over 40 characters. As noted on page 5, the length of each texture name plus the base file name must not exceed 63 characters - a limit imposed by the structure of the .mdl file. You can't do much about the texture names. So, shorten the base file name to "PBY6", or something else less than about 15 characters and all should be well.

Don

Thanks Don

I just found that you had replied to this thread.
For some unknown reason I don't get email notifications that I have a reply at this forum.
I changed the aircraft 'title' in the aircraft.cfg file to a shorter name and SAMM2 now accepts the aircraft and allows me to convert and save.
I had 'played around' shortening names where I could but did not change the 'title' in the aircraft.cfg.
Thanks again and I hope that you enjoyed your holiday.

John, there is no need to change the title in aircraft.cfg. You only need to shorten it in the field labelled "Name" on the SAMM Main Panel.

Don

Ok

Thanks

I meant to ask if there is a method to create a static aircraft model of a float plane which will move around with the waves like the C185 which can be selected from FSX library objects (aircraft)?
