• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Saving While building a Polygon in SBuilderX

Is it possible to save my work while I'm doing a polygon. I am using SbuilderX 3.13 and is trying to create a hole for an island. SBuilder crashed on me while I was outlining the island. So I am looking at saving at intervals while I am building the polygon. But it seems like I have to finish the polygon in order to do a save. True?

Yeah, that's a problem that I had a few years back. I was doing the islands of Hawai'i and it posed a problem, as each island took considerable time.

You *could* approach the task in a different manner and get the same results. Works great when you need to shut things down for the night or go to work or normal stuff. If interested I can give the details on "my approach" to the task.

BTW, just recognized the Flag! Are you working on Hawai'i? If so, I have existing files that *might* be shared. LMK

Kent,

An approach I have used is to roughly approximate the island poly quickly and save. Re-work a small section at a time adding points, moving points, etc., then save and move on to the next portion.

Thanks. I'm just starting to try scenery so I did the St. Barthelemy tutorial with no problems. So, following that tutorial, I am practicing on Oahu. The crashes happened when I was well into the polygon and always when I did a pan in the polygon mode. Wonder if the large amount of points (compared to St. Barth) is a factor. Anyway I am approaching it with the method suggested by Wally-Bob and seems to be going Ok so far. Thanks for the help.

BTW - Another nagging problem while doing a polygon is inadverently hitting the right mouse button, thereby prematurely closing the polygon. I use AutoHotKey (free) to disable/enable the right click by with a hot key. Anyone interested with the details and a simple script, let me know.

Hi guys,

another approach is to draw a complex poly as a vector outline and turn it into a poly once you're done. One can work in sections, saving in-between, and then join the vectors prior to doing the final Make Poly step.

Cheers, Holger

My method works differently then Holger's, but allows for reusing of material if needed.

Here's what Maui looks like. This is just the reintroduction of the water after the default has been excluded. I realized I had problems doing large areas in one sitting and tried to find a solution. The principles outlined as "standard" are to exclude the default water, make a new replacement polygon and then cut a hole to allow the land to show through. Since the goal is to have better water definition, since all of FSX is land with water added, I realized I didn't need to worry about parent/child polygons if I just added in detailed water after excluding.

You can see there are 20 new water polys, each of differing size. IIRC, once my head started blurring I would close the poly off and take a break! :o There is one hole poly down in the SW corner. Each of the polys can be broken into lines and "reused" for things like coastlines and waves.

Some day I plan to start on the Big Island, which is bigger than the other 7 islands combined. Nothing a couple of weeks of clicking can't accomplish.

And in case anyone should wonder, I am aware the State of Hawai'i offers data on their GIS site, including SHP files of coastlines. Mine are more accurate!

I think SBuilderX has drawing pad support... Luis could confirm this. A pad would very much help with fatigue!

Another way migy be to start with a large water area, then split that to a smaller QMID squares, then move/insert points to reshape the water as needed. Save often.
