• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SbuilderX Install problems

Messages

I had problems getting a flatten to create a bgl. Whatever I did it would not do it. I decided to re-install and my problems have just got worse. Now the installation does not pick up the SDK. If I have a look in the directory there are no SDK files within the tools folder at all, no bglcomp etc. Now when I run sbuilderx I just get the large popup and the key line seems to indicate that access was denied to the folder D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK etc etc.

Has anyone got around this problem, I cannot see how I can install as an administrator, despite the fact I am.

Running Vista Ultimate 32bit by the way

Cheers

Paul

In SBuilder you need to select the objects which you like to compile beforehand. Maybe you have missed this?

Edited: Sorry, I did not read your description well enough. You surely know about this.

Your problem seems to start with the SDK installation. You say that the files are missing from the respective directories. Is D:\ your windows installation drive or do you have just named the folder structure on D:\Program Files\... according to the C:\Program Files\...?

Vista is only picky in protecting the C:\Program Files\... structure on it's installation drive. Therefore it is recommended to install Flight Simulator, SDK and associated design tools outside this structure.

In your case I would do a reboot now (to close all open file streams) and afterwards make a de-installation and then a new installation of the SDK outside the system %Program Files% folder. Then try SBuilderX again.

I was doing that, but it still didn't work, hence the decision to re-install and the subsequent problems

Paul,

you have Vista installed on the C: drive and you have a "C:\Program Files\..." directory, correct?

If you look into the folder "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\..." with the Explorer, you don't see bglcomp.exe. Do you see no files at all or are only the executable missing?

You did try to reinstall the SDK. Did you receive any error message? Did you install over the old installation or did you remove the SDK beforehand?

Things you could do to isolate/identify the problem:

  • Install any other application into "D:\Program Files\..." and see if this installation works.
  • Only if the answer to my first question is yes: open the Explorer, select "D:\Program Files", right click, select properties, security, advanced and take ownership of the folder structure. Make sure that you set the flag "Replace permission all child objects". Do you see any files now?
  • Remove the SDK, install it onto "C:\MSFS\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\" and see if the files get installed there.
So much for now.

The D Drive is my main Vista drive, its is a partition. The C runs XP, everything realting to programs in Vista all sit on D that includes FSX etc

Here we go :)

Then "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK" is indeed within the protected system folder.

Go to your control panel, select add / remove programs, and de-install the SDK. Then re-install it to "D:\MSFS\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK".

You should now see all files.

Create a folder "D:\MSFS\Tools". Below this folder install SBuilderX, ADE, and whatever FS related Design Tools you are using.

Further I would very much recommend to install the Flight Simulator itself below this structure. If you do so you can point the BGL output path of your tools directly where they should go in the respective scenery folders.

You will have problems to create a BGL file below "D:\Program Files\..." (this is where it all started, right?.

If you don't want to reinstall the Flight Simulator, define your desktop (or any folder in your My Documents structure) for BGL creation. You then have to manually copy and paste the BGL into your scenery target folder.

Thanks for your help, however the simple cure was to deselect User Account Control and that did the trick:D
