• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Scenery Configurator PRO & LITE v2 released

Hi everyone,

I have just released the latest, fully reworked versions of the Scenery Configurator for developers.

This program allows flight simulation developers to create a customizable scenery configurator based on their needs. The basic concept is a program that activates and deactivates files by changing the file extension.

This makes it possible for the developer to provide different levels of detail and complexity which can be chosen by the end-user.

This concept makes it even possible to change the appearance of the scenery based on the season the user has selected. Season switching in the common flight simulators such as Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X or Lockheed Martin’s Prepar3D is a complex topic since the BGL file format does not allow automatic season switching by default. This tool makes it possible for the user to switch seasons and much more, it is all up to your configuration!

New in v2
  • New, sleek user interface!
  • Advanced error handling
  • Automatic lock when FSX or P3D is running
  • Changing thumbnails on option hover (PRO version)
  • Facebook and Website links
  • Improved stability and performance
Pro vs. Lite
  • Unlimited Option Groups
  • Unlimited Options
  • Changing thumbnails on option hover
  • Commercial Use Allowed
Documentation

The set-up for both versions is basically the same so here's the link to the Documentation of the LITE version which described every step in detail:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you! :)

Thanks Thunderbolt,

it is really a nice tool and should be standard by now for every payware developer, given the cheap price. Some come to mind, where you still have to move textures around manually (e.g. EDDM) or have no influence at all on the performance.

And it is a really nice gesture to make it free to use for freeware sceneries!

On another note: I saw you are selling also a tree library on simmarket. This would be very interesting for me with many other library objects (baggage carts, everthing what can enhance a freeware (or payware) scenery. Maybe there could be a different license for payware-use and freeware-use. I saw you offer some cars / transporters on your website but they are a little expensive to use them in freeware sceneries.

Lars, I think this might be just what I need. I was pouring my coffee this an hour ago, wondering how I was going to go about creating something like this.

So this allows a developer to run a script, or something that turns a bgl on or off within a specific folder? Is that how this works? Suppose I want to remove/replace a .cfg file within a simobject file? Could I do that?

@David Hilker : Thanks you David I'm glad to hear that you like the tool! Concerning the 3D models, the prices conform to the standard prices for similar
models at Turbosquid.com. But I will give the pricing more tought and maybe apply a different model for non-commercial licenses.
I will also "scan" my library for other possible candidates soon but some of the objects we use are also licensed from several sources so I can't
simply put them up for purchase.

@Ripcord : A short description and detailed instructions about the functionality can be found in the documentation I have linked in the first post.
You can remove/rename cfg files as well. Important is the relative path to the file.
So let's say you have the scenery installed at "AddOn Scenery/My Scenery" and the Configurator is in the "My Scenery" folder. Then the path to the SimObjects file would be something like
"..\..\SimObjects\Boats\My Boat\myBoat.cfg" - using this path you could rename the file to "..\..\SimObjects\Boats\My Boat\myBoat.cfg.OFF" using a checkbox.

The Lite version of the Configurator also includes a "Testbed" representing the FSX/P3D folder structure. You could "mess around" in that Testbed as much as you like
and test the different scenarious before actually embedding the Configurator into your scenery project.

An amazing tool. I'm trying the free license in my freeware pack that i am developing. It will be 8 sceneries of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Only for replace the default sceneries.

The documentation is very useful. It has come in the exactly moment that i was looking for a easy way to let the users to activate or deactive each scenery of the pack.

Thank you so much!

Thanks Lars for the response. I bought a copy right away, but I have not had a chance to really dig into it yet.

Damn, I love this thing!

No idea yet if it works or not (my rendition), but it sure is simple enough to work with (perfect for somebody like me). And I've got to say -- it looks pretty decent for just a few minutes of playing around with it!

Thanks for sharing this WIP with us Ripcord, looks great! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I certainly have one: What does the "drunken sailors" option do? ;)

Nothing, just a test. Good for the imagination I think.

Since my project is more about AI traffic than it is about scenery, I don't really have a big need for .bgl on/off functionality at this stage. So for me it looks like it will be primarily just a lot of deck configurations -- which is OK, I have a LOT of them.

Heads up for the upcoming update:

I have implemented easy season switching and the possibility to switch between "Dark" and "Light" theme.
The new version is currently in testing. Details about season switching:

Let's say you have the texture "trees.dds" in all variations. You can now place the variation for spring in the texture subfolder "texture.SP",
the variation for summer in the subfolder "texture.SU"...same applies for fall and winter obviously.
The default texture (summer most likely) will also go in your scenery's texture folder.

Now you have:

"Your scenery/texture/trees.dds" (Default: Summer variation)
"Your scenery/texture/texture.SP/trees.dds" (Spring variation)
"Your scenery/texture/texture.SU/trees.dds" (Summer variation)
...

By switching the season with radiobuttons, the textures from the corresponding folder will be copied into the scenery's texture folder automatically.

This should make season switching a lot easier and file renaming for seasons becomes redundant.

Hi everyone,

version v2.0.0.4 of the Scenery Configurator PRO has been released :)

New features:

Season switching by texture copying (as described above).
Automatic updates for the Configurator from our servers.
Season switching now is this easy:

<Seasons current="Summer">
<Spring>
<folder source="texture\texture.SP" destination="texture" />
</Spring>
<Summer>
<folder source="texture\texture.SU" destination="texture" />
</Summer>
<Fall>
<folder source="texture\texture.FA" destination="texture" />
</Fall>
<Winter>
<folder source="texture\texture.WI" destination="texture" />
</Winter>
</Seasons>
