• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Selling your 3d models?

Hi,

I'd like to ask about selling your 3d models. Normally we do models and export it to be used in Flight Simulator software (FS9, FSX, P3D or X-Plane). We are familiar with selling our product to end user. Have you ever asked to sell your 3d models for other purposes such as architecture, other software developers who are not in Flight Simulator Gaming (such as full size flight simulator software)?

Thanks for any comments.

Regards,
Tic

I have sold a few of my models, a couple of product visualizations but mostly game props/assets in .fbx format. I have also done some ArchViz stuff but that was really just to improve my technique for outdoor lighting/realism.

Some people have sold mine, without my permission!
What a Shame :O, do you know those people? those are no-life.....

@Tic

actually, I wanted to sell one of my creation but as is is made on sketchup, people said I should not....
if your models are good, you can sell them on Turbosquid ;)

I would talk to other people. If your models are good, you can sell them anywhere. There were 189 SketchUp format models at Turbosquid when I just checked...

That's too bad.

If you sell your model, are there any restriction or some agreement that they will not use those models for other purpose.

I guess that would depend on what you are selling and where you intend to sell it. There are lots of places to sell 'stock' items and some will give you a choice of licensing options. For Example: Turbosquid is a huge and popular marketplace and your models would be protected by license agreement (their Royalty Free License covers most things). The downside to is that they only pay 40 percent base royalties unless you grant them exclusive rights. Unity and Unreal Engine Marketplaces both pay 70 percent for non-exclusive rights and both would protect you with a Royalty Free License if you intend to sell 'stock digital media' products. You would retain ownership.

Only thing I can suggest is to look over the Royalty Free License agreements at the places I mentioned and see if that covers what you need.

There was a guy on TurboSquid that had a large number of aircraft. One was exactly like mine. Turned out they were all backwords generated FS models he had ripped and was trying to sell them. I reported him and they shut him down.

But, if you have models you are interested in selling, by all means, sell sell sell! That is an entirely different business and field. There are many sims and games and developers look for things to put in their games. Even small things like suit cases and dummy cars and plants and misc things. They all sell.

There is a new model making field of people now. Instead of making plastic models, they get a 3D design engine and start making things and render them. Hobbyists that just make 3D model scenes. They often will look around for parts to put in their scenes to render, and they are totally different from the gaming field...

There is no way to hunt those illegal models except searching by yourself to protect your work. If there are a small tag or program that attached to the model once you have made it and it will be ported whenever it has change would be good. One of my friend hide his signature in the texture to prove his procession. I think it is a good idea since the texture would be together with the model. But anyone can change the texture easily.

I place my initials in the actual mesh of the model in an obscure location.

An actual comparison on the wireframe and UVW map level between the stolen model and one of your own will also work.
That's at least how it was found out that an AI traffic team had "borrowed" parts of meshes from other AI traffic models.

My Bell 206 was actually ripped and converted to sketchup format with exact textures like on mine, but different names

Horrible.. Same with a couple of mine. I couldnt believe it.

I purchased a Robin DR400 from TurboSquid. Looked perfect for FS! I couldnt believe it, and affordable. I looked all through the Robins available on FS and found none like this. I bought it, redid the cowling to the version I wanted, fitted it with all the gauges, made improvements, then launced it. Turned out, the team who made it, made it for X-Plane, freeware as well. I was so embarrassed and they were so mad. I cut them a bargain and we also both went to TurboSquid and reported the incident and the crook. Really embarrassing situation. But, we negotiated a deal and so all was well. But that taught me to be even more careful concerning buying models on a model store.

But... As for selling your own work, try it. You might make some good money. Maybe even sell parts for scenery builders in FS and X-Plane. That might be good business for you.

I think I need to start to do the same way. Including the models that I'm going to sell and the new airport scenery as well.

Just out of curiosity, if you sell a model on Turbosquid is it a one time deal or can you sell multiple copies?
