• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Should I weld?

This might have been covered in the threads concerning poly vertex and optimization. But I wanted to clarify and make sure I understood how vertex and polys/faces are supposed to be kept.

I make a box, it has 8 vertexes... and 12 faces.... i select all faces (or polys) and clone them to element, flip normals to show walls inside box. and it has now 16 vertexes and 24 faces...

Should there be different vertecies for the inside polys(faces)? Or, should I weld the identical location vertexes together? (thus making an original 8 sharring identical locations) They act funny when I try to in gmax. (making me think I am doing something wrong) But I am unsure if this is a necessary optimization step and there 'should' be a double of vertexes if there is a need for a 'new' set of poly faces.

Are these vertexes not needing (and incorrectly) to be welded together meaning I should keep 16 vertexes for the new faces? Apologies for my ignorance and if I did not understand the other questions (threads) regarding a similar scenario... I just wanted to clarify that this was a similar issue by stating a simple example using a cube.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I don't think welding will help much. In GMax you will go back from 16 to 8 vertices. But when you export your cube to MDL format you will still end up with 48 vertices.

That may sound a lot to you, but in the MDL format each face will have 4 vertices. That is because the normal is part of the vertex in the MDL format as well and the normal is different for every plane. So if you have double sided polygons you have 12 faces with 4 vertices each.

Thanks for the fast reply, Arno...

That makes sense... I won't weld in gmax, as it does make the poly faces gain an un-natural shade that makes me think im doing something i shouldn't be doing. Especially if it makes no difference in the model export.

Thanks again for the response....

Ed,

A friend of mine proved this had to do with smoothing groups in gmax. He set the smoothing to none, and viola, shades after weld was gone.

I learnt to weld for Fly II, using 3DSMax. Seems I do not need to do this for FS, but it has become a hard to remove habit.

Cheers,

Yes, I could see how the habbit would be hard to break... :)

Since the export keeps a higher count of vertecies due to direction of each polygon side set, i wont weld if its going to re-create a double set after export anyways...

(I havent flown flyII in a long time!!!)
