• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Simulating pilot-controlled AWOS

For hundreds of miles across the midwest, Vandalia's AWOS covers up all advisory traffic on 122.8, ruining the fun of using the radio during flights. In real life, when it is functioning properly, nearby pilots can key up their mic a certain amount of times (three in the case of KVLA) and you can hear the AWOS weather report over the CTAF. I wonder if anyone knows a way to simulate this effect in FSX/P3D and injecting a little more realism into the sim.

Otherwise I'm wiping out the station with Airport Design Editor.

Hi Chris:

Although I have not heard Vandalia ( IL ...not MO ) while flying IRL or in FSX between Morris IL and West Chicago IL, in the past I have had issues with Timmerman in NW Milwaukee WI splattering all over my FSX flights in northern IL.

I keep forgetting how I fixed the latter airport issue in bothh FS9 and FSX, but until I get a chance to find and re-test the fix on my latest installation of FSX and P3D, perhaps in the mean time, this info might help ?

BTW: I don't recall if P3D has the same function as FSX for this feature in question:

Thank you Gary. Doesn't look like there are any magic fixes in your search results either, so I imagine the best solution is just to kill the station. Even if I could reduce the AWOS station's range somehow, I'd still run into the issue of not being able to use 122.8 if I ever flew in the area. I know it's just a few button presses on the keyboard, but not using ATC really makes a big difference to me for some reason.

Hi Chris:

I found the temporary solution I previously used to "turn off Timmerman" in FSX:

Menu > Options > Settings > General - un-check "Auto-open ATC window"

Menu > Options > Settings > Sound - un-check "Voice"

Apparently P3D has the same feature toggle option for this as FSX:

Hmmm... Does one have to copy / edit / exclude / replace the default Timmerman KMWC BGL file with ADE9X to change this at surrounding airports ?

I opened KVLA in ADE9X and changed its AWOS frequency from 122.8 to 122.825, then exported the BGL to my custom airports. Easy enough, but it would have been neat to somehow key up the mic a certain number of times to control the lights or hear the weather if I was close enough.

Hi again:

You might find this info useful in the event you add modifying default airports in addition to your already massive FSX / P3D enhancement task list: ;)

Hey Gary, thanks for the info!

That FSD Wiki link you attached is the same post I remembered seeing a few months ago which led me to believe that a script could make this possible.

But that's a pretty steep learning curve for such an insignificant feature as keying up a mic to hear weather on an airport I'll probably never visit. :)

If a *.XML routine is identified requiring a minimal edit for each airport ICAO, one might wonder if a "stub" airport BGL could modify CONUS default APX*.BGL COMMs ?
