• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SketchUp and sloped runways?

Have anyone tried using SketchUp to build a sloped runway in FSX or is it even possible?

I have read that in GMax you can create a mesh to simulate the slope and the harden it afterwards.

If possible, is it harder on FPS in FSX using polygons to build a runway instead of just using a photo scenery?

If your mesh is good enough you not need to model the mesh, about Sketchup if this have the blend tool then should be achieved. I made one with gmax just using a polygon and blending it. with the profile of the runways. but the work is to get the profile , make a sloped flatten with Ade and a sloped runway, you can't get very accurate data because the data of real world and those of Fsx are not very precise. at least regarding to heights, you must guess the placement of the runways and trial and error. and take into account the Ai traffic, if it's a short runway the behviour is a little weird, because in the sloped area the airplanes will follow the taxipath height, Fsx runways work in a flat world. so the look like floating.

Thanks for your answer.

I have never really thought about this approach to scenery building before.

Lets say I want to build a small airstrip with a sloped or flat runway, and a small wooden hut right next to it.

Would it be a good idea to build everything in SketchUp with textures and all, harden the runway in MCX, create a bgl, create an appropriate AFCAD, and then plop the whole thing into the desired location?

Ofcourse adjustments might be necessary with flattens and exclusions, but that would more or less be a 'turn-key' project.

Only you need an accurate sloped flatten in Ade, and a polygon with the sloped profile every thing else is done by MCX and ADE. if you have time enough of course can be achieved.
