• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SOLVED!!! Model won't show in sim

Hello and good morning to all,

I've been playing around with some modelling in Blender and I'm still trying to get a grip on things. I have been able create some basic buildings and other 3D objects, but I wanted to try and create some new taxiway signs from scratch with some LOD's. The modelling went well and I'm happy with the result. I've done the following steps:

  1. Export 4 models (LOD 400, 100, 50 and 5) as a Collada from Blender
  2. Import each of those in ModelconverterX and applied the PBR materials (as I've done successfully with other models) and export those as separate LOD MDL's.
  3. Re-import the LOD 100, imported the other LOD MDL's with the LOD create and export as a 'master' MDL.
  4. Finally I've imported the 'master' MDL with the Convert and place object wizard in the right location.
I've places the models I made in Blender on a reference image, which also is the base for my ground polygons. My GP's are showing correct in the right location, so my taxiway signs should show in the sim at the right location as well as I have set the position as a preset in ModelconverterX and other models showed correct in sim via the same methode.

On opening the sim however the models are not showing. All normals are correct in Blender and the models show as expected with the applied materials in MCX. I have no error's on applying the materials nor on exporting the models in the different steps I took. Also the export with the Convert and place object wizard shows no sign (pardon the pon) of error. Only an empty space next to the taxiway where the models should be placed. I've flown around with Chase Plane in order to see if the placement was incorrect, but no luck anywhere in the vicinity of the airfield. I've even gone so far as reinstalling the latest version (just 30 minutes ago, 2 April 2019) of MCX and placing the LOD 400 model, no real LOD's in the BGL, on it's own, but nothing shows up in either cases.

Any ideas and/or suggestions?

Hello...

The only suggestion I can give is: maybe the textures for the models haven't been placed in the texture folder accompanying the ".bgl" file. Maybe an over-kill on the number of LOD for taxiway signs, but that wouldn't cause a problem such as this (I don't think).

Thanks for the suggestion Doug. The image files are in the texture folder. I even made sure the names didn't change from the export. You're maybe right on the overkill, but I wanted to try. Like I said, I've also tried just one of the models without LOD's. Didn't work...

Have you tried placing the mdl as a test (by using ADE or similar)?

No... I've tried it in the meantime, didn't work. The only thing I can think of is that there must be something wrong in the model I don't know about which can't be exported to the sim.

Yes, thank! I missed the AGL checkbox in the position. It's not there in the ground polygon wizard, hence why the confusion. Thanks again guys!
