• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA some photreal issues

1. I have Win 7. SBX is install on my main drive.... not progrm files (x86). Lately it has been difficult to get a good map when doing photoreal.
Often I get one of two notes- a. cannot access image. b. try closing background in view and reopen and try again. I have to do this many times, switching to different zoom levels and/or LOD levels and finally might get something that works.

Can this be due to low resolution images and not my fault?

2. Been helping a couple of new guys with photoreal. One fellow is trying scenes in Polynesian region. Many islands. I've seen his bmp and blend mask.... seems ok. result sometimes is- a. one big square as if he did background compile with no map. b. photoreal is visible but his photoreal island is way off the default island by maybe 1,000 yards... give or take. OR c. half of his photoreal shows up but also shows many ugly squares.

3. I recently corrected one of these photoreals for him and finally succeded but had to do some coloring here and there. But I ended up with 3 rectangular tiles of white off the island and in the default area. I manually colored these and ended up with 3 BLACK tiles!

could all this be just poor sat imiages from Google or VE? Main concern is why do the images fail so often? i.e. having to close down background and reopn and try again, etc.

I am sure out of all of us.... one of us has the answers to all of the above. Thanx, Bob

Hiya Bob,

I am not proficient in SBX and that is why I did not answer.
But I can tell you that I experienced the same thing with FSEarthTiles when importing photoreal of some Pacific islands.
So it is probably the lack of imagery of both GE and VE.
(But it could also be that when you try to download a bigger area parts of which have a lower res or no imagery at all, neither Sbuilder nor FSearthTiles knows how to handle that at the same time. Just a guess.)

I never use SBX for photo-textures, I prefer FSEarthTiles.

However, SBX generates an inf file with the line:

NullValue = 255,255,255

Which means that areas of white will not be compiled by Resample.

Roby- good to hear from ya. left ya alone lately- thought you wer busy. I might want to jabber with you about using ADE's library mgr. I got one item placed but no twxture.

George- hey! good talking at ya. Yes- wondered- Wasn't it true that if there is no image it will render white ? Ergo- the white patches here and there?

I thought I read that somewhere.

Both of ya- wanna come over and help plow snow? Snowing right now. I have a lawn trator with a blad on it and a snow thrower. both are a kick-in-the-pants to use. :) Bob

Hi Bob,

I was going to send you a Xmas card mail with a picture of how it looked like here the day before yesterday (I will send you another one), so do not speak about lawn tractors because I have one that does not work when it has to. George will probably not need one because where he lives in the UK, the snow melts before he has a chance to think of buying one.
And yes, white means no imagery as far as I can determine. Try e.g. American Samoa's Tutuila island and you will see what I mean (It is almost finished so I will upload it to my dropbox).
The areas of white you have talked about, I tried to paint black as well with a blend mask to cancel them out but no joy either. I had to limit the photoreal to an area without white in order to overcome it. The result is a part of the island as photoreal blended with the default landclass after having put on a new accurate mesh, a watermask, etc.
I thought it was going to be easy but I have been working on it for the last couple of months, go figure that.

Roby

Ah... that pic! Snow in Samoa!!! No wait- your place! Actually the pant-out works if yoi fuss with it long enough. My basic problem a while ago was that I put a photoreal in addon scenery\scenery for test purposes (this was before i activated the relevent scenery.I ended up with two photoreals - one with black patches that just would not go away, and I couldn't figure out why. Duh!!!!

One I am working on now looks nice. Water could use some more work but - this is a learning thing for a friend of mine in Thailand.

I'm getting him started on FSDS. Instantly he wanted to make an open hangar so you could see inside and maybe moving doors. I told him he has to learn how to use the program first! He is getting a good start. But now he wants to make a flyable plane!

i can see you and george now- head in hands, shaking heads! :D Told him a static can take months and a flyable - if you know how- can take a year or more, often! Gotta love it. Bob
