• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Sorry ... getting mad with effects

Sorry for this question ... but it's quite hard for a newcomer to understand the effects :)

Naturally I read the post dealing with not showing smoke ... butt got confused: should I really reinstall Acceleration ???

My problem is this one:
I imported into FSX my first Power Plant which I made for Flight Gear in Blender; the Blender to MDL script work fine :)

Now I'm willing to add some smoke to the stack, and indeed in FSX folder Effects I found the following files, that I thought the right ones:
-fx_SmokeStack.fx
-fx_SmokeStack2.fx
- Cntrl_SmokeStack.fx

So I prepared the following .xml:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<FSData version="9.0"
        xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
        xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">
<!-- Coord spiaggia Cinquale lat="43.9789965" lon="10.1333427" -->
<!-- Coord corrette lat="42.9563032" lon="10.6028059" -->
    <SceneryObject lat="43.9789965" lon="10.1333427"
                   alt="1.5M" pitch="0.0" bank="0.0"
                   heading="355" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE"
                   imageComplexity="DENSE">
    <LibraryObject name="{d803e8d5-efe6-419e-9715-c55f11030624}"
                       scale="1.0"/>

    </SceneryObject>
	<ModelData
	sourceFile="ENEL_Piombino_4x330MW.MDL"/>

	<SceneryObject lat="43.9789965" lon="10.1333427"
	alt="220" pitch="0" bank="0"
	heading="0" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE"
	imageComplexity="DENSE">
	<Effect effectName="fx_SmokeStack" />
	</SceneryObject>

</FSData>

compiled with BglComp... but the smoke doesn't show up.

Then I tried the tag
<Effect effectName="fx__SmokeStack2" />

Then I tested the tag:
<Effect effectName="Cntrl_SmokeStack" />
but in either case the smoke wasn't showing

I used eventually the tag:
<Effect effectName="fx_ForestFireLarge" />

and I got a working fire on top on my stack :(

... but I was looking for smoke only !!!!

So ... why some effects do not show up, while others do ????:banghead:

Many effects you have to assign the day-night, dusk-down thing, for they show, don't know if this is valid for smoke, but could be.

Ciao Bernardo ... I understood how to make and operate the night textures ... I wont my Power Plant making smoke :) ... on the contrary it means it's not operating and doesn't produce power !!! :)

Hi,

I am not sure if I understand the problem.
You have a scenery/library object (a power plant) and you want to have smoke come out of the chimney?
There are several options to do this but the easiest one is just to load your scenery object into MCX, go to the attached object editor and add the effect you want. If you want to have it active by day only, you have to add "day=1; night=0 in the atrached object editor.

Hmm, I tried fx_SmokeStack2.fx and it didn't display in FSX, but it does display in FXEditor :confused:

It must be finger trouble :p

Yes I would like the Power Plant stacks emit smoke, all the day through ....
And I'm trying to do it by mean of calling the "special effect" in the .xml file (to be processed by BgtlComp.exe) ... as mentioned this way the "smoke effect" doesn't work, while the "x_ForestFireLarge.fx" show up perfectly !!!! (See my 1st post) :(

If you simply add the effect in ADE without object, it shows just the same.
Here is what it says in the xml:
<SceneryObject
lat="52.6045215333333"
lon="6.323958"
alt="0.0M"
altitudeIsAgl="TRUE"
pitch="0"
bank="0"
heading="0"
imageComplexity="NORMAL">
<Effect
effectName="fx_SmokeStack2.fx"
effectParams="day=1;night=0"/>
</SceneryObject>

which probably means that you either make the effect part of the mdl or make it a seperate 'scenery object'.

Hmm, it doesn't work for me :confused:

Perhaps it is because I have it on top of photo scenery?

No, this one is on top of the NL2000 photoscenery.
But perhaps you waited too long to have a look because the effect disappears after 10 minutes (that is probably what stoptemp=10.00 means).

No, I started a flight with the user aircraft sitting next to the effect :confused:

I am at a loss then as to why it does not show.
Here is what it looks like:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I guess I am offending you if I ask if you have set your ADE to show objects even when settings are set to sparse? You did add it as an effect with ADE, didn't you? You do have to close and reload FSX to set the time of the start of the effects back to nil or delete the stoptemp entry in the properties. Hopefully that helps?

No, I compiled the xml directly.

What is the size and date of your fx_SmokeStack2.fx?

12/05/2006 05:13 1,399 fx_SmokeStack2.fx

George

Correct except that 1.399 is not shown. If it means that the size is 1.399kb, it is 1.36 Kb here (in the properties/details, otherwise mentioned as 2Kb).
Running sp2 if that perhaps makes a difference, you never know?

This is weird Roby.

If I start a flight at the airport which has the effect, I can't see the smoke.

If I inhibit the photo-scenery, I then see it :confused:

If I then re-enable the photo-scenery I still see it :eek:

This happens on both my W7 64bit and XP 32bit systems.

Hi again, George,

But you did not shut down your FSX program?
Well, to check, I started FSX again, went to free flight and entered my EHWH private heliport:). And the effect is there alll right.
My EHWH heliport and house, is on top of the photoreal NL2000 scenery and I added the smoke stack2 effect as an effect with ADE.
Where did you put your effect .bgl? Because it becomes a bgl once you put it into a scenery, I guess? Could it be a matter of priorities in the scenery.cfg?
I will try to put it into another scenery and will also delete the tempstop to see what that gives.

Yes, I did restart FSX and I have tried placing the effect in ADE.

I still need to inhibit/enable the photo-scenery before I see the smoke.
