• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.

SP1A refuses to install

Hi everyone,

There must be an obvious answer to this one... something which I've overlooked... but its driving me crazy!

I've been using the FSX SDK installed from FSX Deluxe CD 1 for a while with no worries. Then I got to the stage when I absolutely needed to update it with SP1 and SP1A. Install of SP1 went smoothly and it is properly installed in the default location on my C drive. However, I just cannot get fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe to run.

Either that or it is lightening fast and is done in the blink of an eye???

I've tried downloading it again and the same occurs.

I can't find any other threads about this, so I must be at fault somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

Andy

No it shouldnt be lightning fast. I think SP1 is about 45megs and SP1a is a few more. Of course I have 4 gigs of ram so everything is fast but it took me about 4 or 5 minutes to install it

New idea if you have a secondary disk(harddrive) in your computer, then try installing the SDK on that (normally drive D:) and placing a shortcut to it on your desktop. I did that much higher performance

Hi,

When you mention installing SP1, do you mean SP1 of the SDK or SP1 of FsX itself? When upgrading the SDK it is not needed to install SP1 before you install SP1A.

So are you saying that no screen appear at all after you launch the installer of the SP1A update? And you get no error message or whatever?

After double-clicking on the installer .exe file, it may take up to 60 seconds before anything appears... be patient, 'cause it takes awhile to unpack all those files and get the .msi application running!

Hi everyone,

Still tearing my hair out here... I'm going to be bald soon!!

I've completely unistalled the SDK on my C drive. Then I reinstalled it on my second hard drive (where I also have FSX). I then downloaded fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe again and tried to run it. NOTHING! I've double clicked it and left it for 30 minutes... still nothing. I have 3Gb RAM, so it shouldn't take that long to unpack. I've tried running it from inside the SDK directory, inside another random directory and also in the root of my 2nd hard drive. NOTHING! I've even tried running it from the DOS command prompt... NOTHING... it simply returns to the commant prompt and nothing whatsoever happens.

I really am going insane here! It seems completely inexplicable to me!

If anyone has the time I'd be incredibly grateful if you could download it and see if it at least runs on your machine.

Soon I'll have no hair left to tear out and I'll have to start gouging out my eyes!

Many thanks indeed.

Andy

BTW, I forgot to say, following Arno's instructions once I'd reinstalled the SDK on my 2nd HD I did not install SDK SP1... I went straight to SDK SP1A and only tried to run that.

Hi Andy,

This is really weird, but without any error message or so it is quite hard to us to guess what could be going wrong.

What OS are you running?

This is very strange.

Andy, you are not crazy. I just tried to run the installation program for SP1a and it will not launch. It does nothing.

Now, what is interesting, is that I already have the update installed.
I did that about 3 weeks ago. I just thought I'd try running it again (since you asked) to see what would happen. Well..Nothing happens.

I keep all of my setup files for various programs together in a folder and the SP1a update is the only one that won't launch. Is it because it detects that the update is already installed on my PC? I don't know.

I did install the FSX SP1 first but I don' think that should matter.

Have you tried disabling your antivirus temporarily and then running the update? (that didn't change anything for me, but maybe?). I'm at a loss.

-Michael.

Hmmm, now there's a thought. Maybe the "first time" didn't complete, but the Registry was changed to indicate that it was "installed..."

Check in Add/Remove Programs (be sure to check off the "Show All Files" box!) and see if there's a listing for FSX SDK1a that you can use to "Uninstall"... :twocents:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

That did it. Yes, FSX SDK SP1A was listed under Add/Remove programs, alongside FSX SDK. I assume the install never completed yet got stuck in the registry, which was detected by the SP1A setup. This is despite me uninstalling the SDK several times (using the setup file on Deluxe CD1).

I Removed SP1A and the original SDK for good measure. Then re-installed from CD1. This time I double clicked SP1A and after a pregnant pause it ran as expected!

Many thanks to everyone for your help.

cheers

Andy

I'm glad I was able to provide the solution (lucky guess?) :)

The problem you had was that the "setup file on the DVD" only "uninstalls" the FSX SDK, which leaves the FSX SDK SP1a Registry entry behind, along with the "msi uninstall" files for FSX SDK SP1a...

I know that it is confusing, but ACES had to do things this way so that folks who didn't purchase the Deluxe Edition can't install the SP1a SDK update files.
