• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Stairwell to a Cellar

I have made a model which includes a stairwell to a cellar. The problem is that when converted (FS2004) the surrounding ground level appears in the well, blocking off the stairs.
The top of the stairs and sides of the well are above ground level.
I tried using a canopy overhead and also using glass at ground level, but it converted as a solid surface.
What have I missed?

Hello:

Using ADE9, one might:

1.) make a Area16N flatten area slightly larger than the building's foundation that lowers ground level under the cellar

2.) place the building within that small flatten area

3.) cover at ground level the area between the building's foundation and nearby ground with Ground Polygons (aka "G-Polys")

NOTE: When using flattens to adjust the terrain elevations in either FS9 (or FSX), it is important to decide what terrain mesh resolution you intend for your airport to be used with, because the terrain mesh "shape" may change with different factors.

Factors which may may change FS terrain mesh "shape" at run time include:

1.) Internal resolution of loaded local terrain mesh BGL files ("density" of the terrain mesh grid expressed in Meters between elevation data points)

2.) TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL (aka "TMVL") setting in your active FS9.Cfg file

3.) FS GUI terrain mesh complexity slider setting (set at 100%)

4.) FS GUI terrain mesh resolution slider setting (FS2004: must be set in FS9.Cfg)

FYI: For additional details on the impact terrain grid mesh resolution and "aliasing to quad matrix area points" may have on 'precision' of placement for vector content vertices (including "flat", or "tilted / sloped" flattens to blend the edge of the airport background / RWY flatten into the surrounding terrain elevations)... see these threads:

Thanks Gary, I'll give it a try.

Being lazy I was hoping for a Sketchup fix so that I could use it as a direct model in ADE.

You can try this: make a flat plane at ground level in SU with a hole for your stair. You can put a photo type texture on it, or just color it. It will cover the hole left from your flatten and you can use MCX to give it a hard surface. You could even convert the plane to a custom ground polygon if you wanted to get tricky, here's my contribution to the Wiki about how to do it:

Thanks again rk
With my limited expertise I'll work on it.
The photo texture will be the first I think.
