• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

texture animation

Hi

I tried to make an animation of a flag by using a plane and single texture split into cells. I textured the flag as normal and then created a new key frame for each of the different cells showing the flag in its different state. On each keyframe I just moved the texture mapping across to the next cell. When I play the animation I can see (in gmax) the movement I made between the cells, rather than just a slideshow effect of one cell instantly changing to the next. I want it to show just 12 frames at 1 fps dipicting the 12 different flag images to create the effect of it flapping in the wind. I can't understand why the texture mapping movements I made are also seen in between the keyframes making it all a bit of a blur. .

Hope I explain my problem Ok. I remember this was an easy thing to achieve in novasim. I looked for a tutorial on this but could find nothing about it when using gmax and just a single texture sheet... although I have read that it is possible from different posts I have not found any details on how to go about it.

Thankyou for any help or pointers.

Hi,

Moving your texture mapping as an animation will not work, that is not something that MakeMDL supports. But there is a good alternative, you can make a billboard style animation. I can't remember the prefix to use, but it is listed in the MakeMDL SDK. This will show different textures on your object like a cartoon and should be useful for your flag.

Thanks Arno

I looked at the MakeMDL SDK as you suggested and I could only see the possibility to use the prefix Animate_"VCRainMoving"......etc. However this means using a different texture sheet for each frame of the animation. Is there no way to use a single texture split into cells? It seems a more efficient alternative if it is possible.

I like to play around with flags, and yeah, it's pretty disappointing that we can't do vertex (I think this is right) animation in FS2004. There is a couple things you can do to make your flags more believable.

To start with, you can make them rotate with the wind. I think Arno's MDL Tweaker can do this for you. As well, I like to create different models to indicate different wind speeds. So, I'll have a limp flag from 0-5 knots, another flag for 6-10 knots, etc. The same goes for windsocks.

One thing I haven't tried is to animate the actual flag. The most you could to is to move it back and forth, and I'm not sure if animation works when you combine it with the other variables I mentioned above, but it's worth a try. I'm going to be away for the next six weeks, but it is something I've been planning for my next scenery.

sorry for reviving this 'ancient' thread :)

i haven't found any info regarding this kind of animation using FSXSDK, does anyone know if it is supported?

Skinned-boned animation is possible. If you check the sample "oil-rig" model included in the FSX SDK you can see how it was done.
