• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Textures Missing in win7 64bit

I made some objects that worked perfectly in the 32 bit but since I switched to win7 64 bit the textures to these items do not appear.

I checked the library and the items are present but no textures. I then checked them out using Model Converter and in there the textures appear. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out why the textures appear in Model Converter and not FSX.

I even looked at the MDL with Model Converter but I could not find any error. By all rights these scenery objects should appear but they are not. When I look for them using the FSX Object placer they appear black.

I hoping someone will be able to shed some light on this problem so I can have these scenery objects back into my FSX world.

Thanks,
Ed

It's not clear from your post whether the problem is in Gmax/Max or FSX. That said, moving from 32-bit to 64-bit the default location for installing programs changes from Program Files to Program Files (x86). Does that suggest anything?

I think the problem is with FSX as I have other scenery objects that are older and still appear. When I installed FSX it went straight to the root folder. In other words I made sure it did not go to the Program (x86) folder but C:\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

FSX works just fine with Win7 x64.

It is the weapon of choice for most of us.

If you have upgraded or simply copied your directory structure across it is likely that the folder structure is wrong.

Black textures are either missing, or the wrong format. That would include the possibility of them being in the wrong folder.

Exactly what is not working, and how was it installed in the new O/S ?

I can't see how a new OS would cause this. For scenery objects the textures are just stored in a folder next to the bgl files. In the bgl files there are no paths to the textures, just the filename. So that is all independent of where you install everything and independent of 32 or 64 bit as well.

I guess it's more likely to be some corrupt files or else maybe related to the graphics driver that some files are not supported.

Ok I put a line in my fsx.cfg file to tell me what if anything is happening. What it now says is it failed to load the textures. I have not had this problem before so it is very puzzling.

I reinstalled the scenery under Addon Scenery folder. The structure is:

Addon Scenery/WWA_WSSS

In here I put the object placement file and the ADE file. I also have

Addon Scenery/Objects library

In here I put the scenery files and texture files.

I have older scenery items installed in the same manner but these are the only items I seem to have problems with.

I then put the scenery and texture files under the WWA_WSSS folder to see if it made any difference but got the same results.

(Still Scratching my head)

When I installed FSX after going to 64 bit I did copy the directory structure across but the only thing that seems to be missing are three scenery items I made quite sometime ago.

The files are not missing or in the wrong format (dxt1 (bmp)) because they did work flawlessly before.

The only thing that seems to be not working are these 3 or 4 scenery items. The installation of FSX is:

D:\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

What is the directory structure for this part?

Subfolder SCENERY == with object library.bgl
Subfolder TEXTURE == with textures referenced by THOSE libraries

Note: the textures must be the ones for the library in corresponding Scenery subfolder.

Also the Foldername must be TEXTURE, not TEXTURES.

As suggested above, W7x64 works the same way as W7x86. There is no alteration to files etc required. If it is not working, you have not put the items where they are required.

yes that is the directory structure for Object Library folder still no joy

Fixed the problem by moving the textures to the

Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Texture folder

it's weird. I never had the textures there in the three years I've had these objects but for some reason it now looks for them there.

Oh well, I have my scenery objects back. Thank you guys for helping me out.

Yes, it was the only posibility, the fsx texturesfolder in the root directory but as you said the objects were custom made objects, it could be be expected.

I would not consider this solved. Moving textures to the main texture folder is a bad idea, it makes things a mess.

I think either you have the bgl in two pages active or the folder structure of the scenery is incorrect.

Yes ... duplicate library bgls is a very likel explanation.

The global texture folder should not need to be used. It is where FSX looks if it can't find the texture where it was supposed to be!

Sounds like the scenery folders are untidy. That would seriously bug me .. but each to their own

you guys were correct! :) I did a search for the bgl file and found a duplicate in another Addon Scenery folder. I deleted the file and then removed the texture files out of the base Texture folder and it appears everything is working the way it should.

Thank you very much for your expert counsel. I would probably still be searching for a solution if it wasn't for the kind folks here.

Thank you again,
Ed

Glad to hear you got it all solved now :)
