Textures not showing when converted to MDL/BGL in FSX

Hi,

I am at my wits end with a little project i am doing for some scenery within FSX.
I have yet to finish the vehicle but i would like to get the wheels sorted quickly.

When converting the DAE file to MDL, it shows within MCX that the texture (from a photo i took) is not showing.
I basically took a photo of a wheel from an Oshkosh tanker. I placed that photo (after cropping etc) as a photo texture to place over my simple wheel models so it looks relatively real.
However inside MCX, the wheel textures are showing up as all white (non existent).
I have tried converting the JPG textures into .DDS and also tried .DXTBMP to see if that worked within FSX.
When i started up FSX, i placed the object with my scenery object placement tool and the wheels were just a colourful mess. (The visual you get if you open a DDS image in Photoshop for example).

So, i am a total loss on what to do. I have put the BGL into the "scenery" folder of my scenery and placed the texture files into the "texture" folder. I have tried JPG, DDS and DXTBMP formats using the conversion tool within MCX but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. At first i did try to import a wheel from 3DWarehouse to see if i could try that but whenever i started up the placement tool, it would crash FSX for some reason.

Is there any kind soul out there who could look over my files if i send them by email in .rar/.zip?

Thanks

Hi,

Suggest you send your skp file as an attachment plus the texture in question if it is not too big (and it shouldn't because it is only a wheel).

Thanks for the reply...

Attached is the model and textures.

As said, several hours of work to do, it's only a minimal model for scenery in FSX.

The tire texture is somehow corrupt. If you create a brand new texture (or use the Resin Gray texture), they show up fine in MCX. I cannot find a way to make that texture "OK" - it always shows up white no matter what I do. I think you will need to create a new tire texture?

Tom,

Really appreciate you testing it for me. I have no idea how the texture has become corrupt.
It was originally a large photo i took of the Oshkosh tanker at a FARP. I then just copied the wheel and saved it as a seperate JPG and then imported it into Sketchup.

I wonder how i can overcome this, if i need to save it in a different format before importing?

Find this forum very valuable with a great set of people willing to help.

Thanks, i have just downloaded the latest plugin which mentions about DDS and DXT etc.
I will try it all again, import a new texture and try exporting.
Will report back tomorrow.
Many thanks for your help so far!

Well,
I loaded the plugin as said. That was fine.
However i started from scratch. Got my photo up in Photoshop and cropped out the wheel. Managed to import it into Sketchup once more. It wouldn't let me import an already converted DDS, only a JPG so i imported the JPG of the wheel and used it as a Texture.
I resized it to the rule that is needed and also using the texture converter, converted it to DDS and yet still it is not showing.
All white where the wheels should be.

I am probably doing something wrong my end.

Perhaps i am not doing something vital to making that texture appear. And something is corrupting it.

I was wondering if any could provide a method (bullet points) starting from importing the texture needed (in JPG) and ending with the textures showing?
It must be me that is doing something wrong here... being a novice.

Hi,

Have you made sure your texture is a multiple of 8 x 8? Like 128 x 128 or 258 x 256, etc.?
PS DDS textures are upside down. Have you thought of checking that option in MCX or turned it upside down yourself?
MCX procedure:
Load mdl, go to mass texture editor, check the resize option in every instance where the image size is not the same before the x as the one after and check all of them for conversion to dds, then choose your texture folder path down below and update. Export your mdl.

Hi,

I just imported the Collada file into MCX which gave me the model showing and no texture (all white)
I then opened up the Mass Texture Editor and it showed my texture as

32x32 and i checked the resize and convert check boxes and selected DDS.

I pressed Update and the textures are still missing from the model in MCX. All white again.

Think i might have to revert to just doing a simple black wheel in sketchup with no detail. It is afterall, just for FSX as a scenery object (not for driving within the sim).

The texture was only there so it would look like it had mud on the tyres.

Many thanks for all the help on this thread, can't thank you all enough.

Edit:
Just tried the 128x128 size and when i pressed the "Render Texture" button, the model then showed the textures. I exported to BGL but as soon as i went to place it into the scenery, it crashed FSX. Just like it did when i tried using third party 3DWarehouse wheels.
If i don't use textures, it places the object fine and does not crash. Very baffling.

I just went through it all again, as before i pressed the "Render Textures" button in MCX and then installed the BGL into the scenery and it is working okay.
The textures are working and showing very well.
Now all i have to do is get the model up to scratch on how i want it to look.

Thanks for everyones help on this, learned a lot as always from those who are knowledgeable on the subject.
