• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Textures turn black

Hola,

I have bmp's, simple ground tiles with a bunch of lines.
I put a background color, whatever color...I have tried gray and blue.
I save them as bmp.

[DXTBmp part]
I open them in DXTBmp and they look the color I chose
I save them as DXT1.
I reopen the bmp and the background has been changed to black.
I'm talking about the texture itself, not the alpha.

What's going on?

I don't know so much about textures formats, but I think DXT1 only gives a 1 bit alpha channel (black and white)

Hi Juan, with DTX1 you can only get black or white in the alpha channel...
BUT as I said, this is not the alpha channel. It's the actual image, the RGB channels.

Hi,

You wrote:

I save them as bmp.

You probably mean: Saved as extended bitmap and choose DXT1.

Try it again.

PS: I do such operation with two files: 1. the background itself (taxiway texture) and 2. the white lines apart for another layer.

Sorry for the confusion, I modified my original post to reflect in what application each operation is done. When I said "save as bmp" that was actually in Photoshop.

2. the white lines apart for another layer (and then I will need an alpha for blending the background texture).
What color is the background of that image? Is that color saved in DXTBmp? Would you mind attaching a sample file?

Thanks

Hi,

I have the same problem in DXTBmp, but only if the alpha channel is black. If so, then the image itself also ends up black. Only DXT1 has this problem.

I'm not going to say "glad to hear that" but it comforts me to know I'm not the only one. I thought I was going banana. Not that it affects the textures in FS but it's just very annoying, right.

Any solution to that?

Hi,

It's not an image but a file made with GMAX ! So the background is transparent. In exemple you fill in the polygons with a color (white, yellow, ...).

Hi,

It is normal that the colour information is lost when you make an area transparent in the DXT1 format. That has to do with the way the information is stored. When a pixel is transparent, the colour is not stored. If that is needed you need to use DXT3, but when something is transparent it does not matter of course.

Finally the master steps in and gives us the correct explanation. Thanks Arno, I am relieve to learn the answer to that behavior. There is nothing that bugs me more than not to know why.
