• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The next Microsoft Flight Simulator

If anyone does (and trust me, there are a very limited few!), you may not be aware that a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement prevents them from saying anything at all that has not already been officially announced...

Which is to say - practically nothing...

In short, if anyone does "speak up" about anything which has not been officially announced, then one of two things must be true:

1. they are talking out of their posterior (aka: speculating)

2. they are telling the truth but violating their NDA, in which case anything they write should be suspect because they are untrustworthy

And of course, you both know that the ACES team that creates flight simulator was disbanded by Microcrap...right???? And if you read the wording on the website... I don't think MS will be making any new FS's... I hope I am wrong..but honestly, I would rather they sell the damned code and let others that care about FS create it. I mean, seriously, why didn't MS just do what P & G does all the time..

When they get tired of something, they offer it to the team that has always created it. MS could have 'sold' the FS franchise to the ACES team and let ACES brand it. MS could have put them up in their own offices (which they already had) and it would have just become a totally separate company from MS. MS still gets the benefits without having to use their own resources to keep it viable.

I know this works, as I stated, P&G does it all the time. They cut a brand but they actually just 'give' or 'sell' it to the team that is making it anyways.. They then become a subsidiary or new entity and P&G picks up the tab for start-up costs. (and yes, I have first hand knowledge that this happens often)

i hope there is a new fs

If the life cycles of the previous FS versions are anything to go by, FSX still has a few more years left in it (People are still using FS 2002 and FS 2004).

...because the hardware still has to catch up! :)

To some degree you're correct but I think FS 2004 will still maintain a group of enthusiasts by virtue of what's available for the sim. A lot of people have invested in payware add-on's that are not currently available for FSX and until their favourite aircraft or scenery become available, I think some will continue to use FS 2004 :twocents:

i'm using fs2004 and not everyone has computers that can give good performance aswell as stunning gaphics, maybe there will be a next fs in a couple of years time when tech increases

Well of course I know. Among a handful of other third-party developers, I actually do know things I can't discuss... yet. :coffee:

I think I'm completely correct! :) Most people have a problem running FSX without some serious investment in new hardware, and until that becomes affordable and we stop being credit-crunched, it'll stay that way. When that situation eases, computer hardware will be lower in price (or a better spec for the same price) and people might think about upgrading and also getting FSX, and the development situation for FSX will also have moved on. So I think the present financial hiatus will artificially extend the life of FSX. But then if ACES never reforms, FSX's life will be as long as there are enthusiasts who want to fly on their computers.

I don't use FSX at all, I use only FS2004/FS9, and I have some investment in addons that I want to protect too, so I'm not knocking FS9 and you don't need to defend it (at least, not against me) - its all I use! I'm one of that "group of enthusiasts" you mention!

My speculation is that there will be no serious consideration given to FSXI until Windows 7 is in the market for a while. No sense in creating something to be run on an outdated ops system. They will entertain the idea once seven is out and widely accepted.

I agree with that speculation. It implies that ACES were actually put on a long furlough (even if they were disbanded) and a core of developers were told they'd be invited back as and when something happened in future. Saves M$ from paying them to wait for Windoze 7.

To judge by the reactions when FSX finally arrived, I'd be interested to know how much testing they ever did on lower-spec machines, or was it all done on high-end whizzy workstations. All versions of FS have to some extent or other stressed the user's hardware when they appeared, but FSX seems to have been particularly hungry for processing power.

The only question I have, if that be the case, is why they cancelled development on Train Simulator 2?

I rarely post "speculation," prefering instead to post on what has already been made public knowledge directly from the "horse's mouth" so to speak.

At this point in time, there are only a few such "facts" of which I'm both aware and have confirmed via my contacts within MS:

1. All ACES positions were eliminated. That means the people were not "fired," they simply no longer had a position. This allowed them to remain able to apply for any current or future positions within the umbra of Microsoft, to apply for unemployment compensation, and qualify for continued health coverage via the COBRA program. A handful (six actually) were retained to ensure an orderly shutdown of operations, archiving of all code and documents, and eventually turn off the lights.

2. Beginning a few days after ACES' closure, a new team was established directly under the full control of the MS Games Division. Several of the former ACES employees were given lead positions in this new team, and charged with hiring any additional personnel on an as-needed basis, as well as begin the planning process for the as-yet-unannounced "flight game." Although no numbers have been made public yet, I'm fairly confident that they now have most (if not all) of the seats filled.

3. Public announcements for several of the "new team's empty seats" have been made, and the job descriptions confirm that the "new flight game" will be based around the MS PC LIVE for Games paradigm. The precise wording of these job descriptions when parsed carefully and run through an inductive reasoning filter make several points vis-a-vis the former FSvNext, TrainSim2 and ESP products that ACES were developing stand out:

a. they were very user "unfriendly" in that they were not easily installed and used by the average customer.

b. the core platform on which all three products was based was too obsolete and convoluted to take advantage of the new direction hardware is taking.

c. the legacy code in the core platform was the proximate cause of both problems a and b above.

d. the distribution model (CD/DVD Boxed delivery) did not fit the new model that MS Games Division wanted to use, and the existing core platform and ancillary files were not flexible enough to be recast for the new distribution model.

Anything beyond the above is simply rampant speculation. Look for an announcement from MS's new team sometime within the next few months.

Hi all.

Time for some rampant speculation. :)

I actually feel pretty good about the chances for a new flight series. But what shape it would take is still unkown.

Hopefully, the next series would keep the essence of the slogan "as real as it gets", and still allow 3rd party content... both commercial and hobbyist.

Face it, the scenery and aircraft 'engines' were getting a bit cumbersome. A new team with new mission goals, and no ties to backward compatibility could yield a superb simulator... or could yield a dud.

I hope we're all here, healthy and safe, until that day.

I'll predict November 2012.

I haven't posted in a very long time, sorry about that.

I really wish I could tell you what we are doing with our "unannounced" title and all that. I have worked on a message for the community, but it may never actually be released as it was written, simply because it has fallen into the abyss of red tape. Everyone must sign off on such things you know...

Much of what we are doing had to be done sooner or later as our foundation was crumbling (in many ways). Eventually it would have completely collapsed anyway.

When news can be shared, it will be. That said, whatever news there will be, won't have much in the way of details. I know you have many questions, but I can't answer them yet. There is much time for that later.

So they are hedging and also retooling. Thus, we may or may not see something new.

Given the new features that ACES were most excited about when FSX came out (i.e. the "gamey" features), I wouldn't expect to ever see the "as real as it gets" slogan again. However, I WOULD like to see Microsoft regulate the commercial content pipeline as this might cut down on the number of charlatans and snake-oil hucksters that currently pervade the market.

"We will continue to produce, sell, and support the latest version of Flight Simulator as we plan for future versions of the franchise."

This is from FSInsider.com. It sounds to me that they will make future versions of flight simulator.

While I hope that is true.. we shall see. I plan on being a billionaire, but odds are not too good that it will ever transpire. But who knows.....

FSInsider also makes it pretty clear that MS has a direction, and that direction for games is console. So I could foresee a console version of FS...but maybe not another pc version. Again, I seriously hope I am wrong.
