• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The old ground poly chestnut again

Hopefully someone can help me here. I am trying to use the method in a previous thread on the creation of ground polys with FS9. So far I have been able to follow the steps wher I can actually see the poly, fully textured, including the use of alpha so that the dirt road blends in with the underlying scenery (VFR photographic). However when I pt the ground scenery casts shados on the poly casts a shadow and the blending disappears. the attached give you an idea

I just don't understand the instructions in the previous thread for kill shadow, how do you create a .cfg file for example

Any help on this would really be appreciated

Hi,

What do you mean with when I put "the ground scenery cast shadow"? Do you mean you have added the platform to let the aircraft cast a shadow?

To remove the shadow you just have to add the code Dick posted to your ASM file (or wait for MDL Tweaker II to be ready, it will do it for you :)). If you have trouble getting the ASM files have a look at some of the other recent threads. This has been discussed often lately.

The first picture above is with the 'Ground scenery casts shadows' box un- checked, with that if I place a plane over it I get a shadow no problem. However, when I check the box to cast shadows the result is in the second picture.

I like to see the ground shadows however as I said when I check the box the blending does not work and the poly suddenly has very defined edges, it is that which I want to remove.

As this is a simple dirt road and I do not want the aircraft to cast shadows does that mean I do not have to bother with the clone and attach procedure?

Unfortunately I have read the instructions over and over in the preceding threads and it just will not sink in

Hi,

Ok, now I understand it. You mean the option in FS itself :).

If you do not want a shadow to be casted on your road, you can indeed skip the clone/platform steps.

But to solve your problems I think you still need to remove the shadow casted by the object itself. Did you try to X file Dick provided? This would save the trouble of hand editing the source.

Still confused Arno, where or what is the X file? all I did to create this effect was create a texture in Photoshop and use the alpha to give a gradual blend. I think that it is the X bit that is confusing me as I haven't a clue where to start...I know what your thinking.....tch amateurs :) the rest of the airfields okay though :D

hmmm... that didn't work  I opened up the makemdl and added the kill shadow a per the instructions. Does that then apply to everything? The problem is I cannot see whether the instruction was there when I did the export as I cannot get to see the LOD tab, as you know the moment you select export off it shoots.

Sorry I am being really thick about this, is ther a way of doing this manually so that I can see the LOD tab

Ah yes, you will need something like MDLCommander to get that tab again. I forgot about that. You can also add the makemdl.cfg file that saves the ASM files automatically for you. There are quite some threads on the forum discussing this, just do a quick search and I am sure you will find some.

I don't know how fast my first test version of MDL Tweaker II will be ready (I hope around the weekend), but I have added the killshadow code to it yesterday.

Presumably I could just use the MDl.exe? however its been that long since I completed the input and output box I have forgotten what goes in there. If I did it that way then I would be able to add the kill shadow. Its annoying because the dirt track looks great without shadows....oh I love scenery design
