• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Tips on creating normal maps for buildings.

For the first time I'm trying to create normal maps for my buildings. I'm playing with the 3D filter in Photoshop, using this tutorial to make the normal in FSX style, but my normal maps never get similar to the expected. In FSX they show completely unrealistic.

So, anyone got a good technique or tip on creating normal maps?

These are my first attempts:

Hello...

It appears to be correct,... what intensity was use to create the normal map... before the -RedInAlpha command in Imagetool? What was used to compile the textures to dds? Which Photoshop was used also?

The normals look realistic to me. Maybe mak them a bit less intense and turn the specular down a notch or two and you should be fine.

I'm using the Photoshop CC 2015. I tried to convert the textures do DDS using the NVidia Plugin, but got some weird results, so I used the Material Editor in MCX to import the BMP files and save as DDS. It worked as shown in the images above.

Following the tips, I'll try to reduce the insentity of the normals and see how it goes.

Now I'm looking for a way of do this without importing the model into MCX, so I can test different textures more easily, by just working in Photoshop, converting to DDS and testing in the Flight Sim.

Can i use the program DXTBmp to convert from BMP to DDS? I remember i did this for my grass texture some time ago.

Edit: I was able to make the Nvidia Plugin work properly. I'll try to adjust the insensity of the normals.
