• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Transparency Broken by Clouds in SP2

Hi all,

As this thread's title imposes, my problem is that in all my scenery objects which have transparent textures applied to them there is a bleed through. Usually clouds and light effects break the transparency. The latter is not a real problem as it is barely noticeable, but the clouds bleed-through is a huge spoiler.

I am using FSDS 3.5 with the following workflow:

-Material Trans

-Export to .X file and then used Farfy's tutorial tweak for transparency (from here: http://farfyscenery.katuu.com/)

-Compile through XtoMDL.exe manually

-Add MDL to Instant Scenery

-Place object

Is there any way to 'heal' this SP2 transparency thing?

Many thanks!
Emilios

In my experience, Alpha works correctly only with DXT1 textures in FSX.

I normally use DXT1 for all texture with no alpha channel and DXT3 for textures with alpha channels for FSX and have had no problems…yet

In this case it looks like the texture that Emilios is using for his tree dose not have clean cut from the branches to the background colour so he is getting funny edges showing in the sim.

ACES advises that DXT5 compression is best for FSX, as it has fewer generated "artifacts" after decompression by the sim... :D

Ah very good Bill.
I just wasn’t sure but I will start using DXT5 Thanks

Hi again,

Just to update anyone who might be having similar trouble. After Farfy correctly pointed out, I tweaked the alpha channel to maximise contrast and ginve a sharp edge between black/white margins so that the fine needles in the tree are more clearly defined.

After, I selected all white colours in the alpha channel and blurred them out a bit to reduce pixelation. Saved as 1024x1024 DXT5 w/alpha and here are the results. Quite nice I think....:D

Thanks for all the help!

Emilios
