• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Transparency for Tower

Well than....what is your drawing order including all the objects?

1. Objects
2. inside
3. outside

like that or the other way arround.

To fully solve bleedthrough problems the correct order indeed is:

  1. Other objects
  2. Inside of current object
  3. Outside of current object

In general the first, other objects, is not really important, as each GMax scenery contains one object normally. Then the distance between the reference points determines the drawing order of them.

The other two can be ordered with linking the objects as discussed about for simple shapes, like a control tower. If you have a very complex object, like a terminal (see my article about these bleedthroughs), then there is not one optimal drawing order. In that case it can also depend on your point of view.

Is it better to divide a complex model like a terminal with tower and some gimmicks into different objects/models?

I did it in my EDDB scenery, because it's easier to put the textures on more simple objects than on one complex.

Yes, I realised that on my tower yesterday. But I wonder if that's better for performance and drawing order.

Linking

I did it with the linking and only 2 simple glasboxes, the interior and the exterior. I can not get the inner floor and ceiling to show. The windows are ok. Don't understand what I am doing wrong....

Did you use 2-sided material? Then it's not working? (just a guess)
I don't know what the problem is then - does everything work while you have the two objects separated? I mean: can you go "inside" the interior and see every side correctly?

Hi again,
no, I did not use a double sided material with the ds_ prefix. That is not the goal. It should be possible to use another texture inside than outside.
And yes, everything is allright when I go inside.
There is no difference if the objects are linked or not as long as the drawing order is right: The windows show correctly but the floor and ceiling inside do not. I even had the 2 objects seperated beside each other and even than, from the right angle, the floor of the interior box disapeared when viewed through the outer windows. I'll get crazy on that!

Sounds to me like the linking didn't work. Can you move both objects together after linking?
If they are properly linked I don't know, why the floor disappears when viewed through the outer windows.

For the drawing order that does not always matter. If you use different objects, then the reference point determines the drawing order and that is not always sufficient. In that case keeping them in one and setting the drawing order manual might work better.

But for other performance things, like the v2 value, it is certainly better to split them in different objects.
