• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can anyone give me some instructions in making a Radio Tower.
I can´t find a way to "open" holes in a square so it will look like
a tower......Am lost again!!

Thank you

Hi

I havent made any objects in FSDS for a long time, but the method I used to create Latice type towers (towers made from tube or poles that look like latice work) was to draw the laticework in Corel draw, export that to a bitmap and create an alpha channel (Black Background - White foreground) which was exported to a bitmap.

Both bitmaps are exported into dxt2bmp (I think thats what its called) to create a .dxt file

In FSD create a cube, extend it to the height and width of the mast and shrink its thickness to 0, join the points (there is a tutorial on this on the web somewhere). Apply the texture to both sides. and voila you have a side of your mast. Repeat and rince for the other sides.

This is the method I used for Blackpool Tower in Fylde V3.1 (on Flight sim.com)

Mostly the pilot flying past does not get that close to your object so you can get away with creating the illusion, rather than be super accurate.

Hope that helps

Ian

You could build in with Tubes. First make a box. Shape it so that the top is narrower than the bottom. Press F2 to get the Part Properties and choose the default colour but make the transparency(alpha) 0. Then start to put in the legs and the top. I have attached a pic for you to see. It looks terrible because I got the top and the bottom together but the idea is there! The tubes were radius 0.125 and coloured blue as you can see. Then you must build up your tower bit by bit. The important thing is to make the box invisible by choosing 0 alpha.

Thank you.....I will try both methods and let you know.

I am beginning to regret I started with FSDS maybe I should have gone with Gmax from the start.

I use both Gmax and FSDSv3 for scenery object design (aircraft carriiers) and can say it won't make any difference which program you use, you will use one of the methods described above. I recently uploaded a model of the USS Langley CV-1 which is famous for the underpinning of the deck. It was commonly called the Covered Wagon. I did all the supports as simple boxes and then used a transparent texture to draw in all the beams.

Cheers, Paul

Hi solid, I have started for you. See the attachment. I made the tall cube first, placed the wire-mesh on one side of it - then I resized the top (making it narrower) afterwards. It is only one side but you will see that it works OK! The files are a bmp wire fence and the other the FSDS fsc file.

Hi Wirmingham...........

Thank you very much my friend, really appreciate your concern......I was involved with some airports and fields so I had not come to this side of the forum.....will check the zips and follow some of your ideas....
If I get it right, just by looking at the pictures, the idea of the tubes looks fairly easy. But like Felix has told me, in FSDS if an object touches the other transparent one, everythin goes transparent......

The one with wirw mesh looks neat...now!!! how did you make the wiremesh????

Wire Mesh Tower

You caught me on the hop - I only just got my new computer - 6 days without one was hell! Now to your question. Ha! Ha! My favourite paint program - MSPaint! Just patience really. I didn't like the ones I saw so I made one myself - 256 colours but finished it with DXT as a DXT1 - In FSDS (Texture Definition) I used 100 setting for the Alpha Channel (On the right side near the bottom). I like to use Green for the Alpha so DXT will convert it OK - didn't seem to work with Black. You can have the bmp it is not copyrighted - I zipped it with RAR for you! Hope you manage to finish the tower.

I know what you mean by..........."6 days without it"..;) ;) ;) ;) ;) , I get home and turn it on before I do anything else!!!!!....great friends....

Thanks will try the .bpm. Yup, am working on the tower and will show once its over. But for know I am going practically crazy trying to get SBuilder o generate the bgl....just a little one would be fine, but the thing just sits there and smiles at me!!!!!!!!!...will try a set up procedure wich Jon directed me on his site. Hope it works....

Thanks again Amigo!!!:)

Warmingham,

I am trying to work on an antenna (similar one with holes), but I don't seem to get the wholes in (am using Photoshop though). Any idea?

B.

Hi Ziegenhorn,
Sorry, I don't use Photoshop - too complicated - always had Paint Shop Pro, right from the beginning. But as I told Mr Solid - I used the old MSPaint to make the texture. In PSP I sometimes delete the background colour so that it is transparent to get the effect - But I always revert to DXT to make sure the texture has disappeared. You are quite at liberty to download any of my files - they are not copyrighted.
