• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

FSX:SE Using Add-On Terrain types

Hi Don

I have tried using Addon terrain types with TSPro but I am getting an error message that says the chosen terrain type has no texture associated with it and will not be compiled. I have copied the FSX Terrain.cfg file from my FSX root to the TSP directory to replace the terrain_FSX.cfg file but to no avail.
TSPro will list the addon terrain types without issue.
I am trying to use ORBX/FTX types.

Is there anything extra I need to do to allow this to happen?

Cheers again,
Andrew

Your query would be a lot easier to answer had you at least said what you were trying to do with which terrain. Based on your general description of the error message, it could be any of a variety of things. (There's an "or" in the message which broadens its scope to include invalid operations/data. )

Please be a little more specific. And it's always helpful if the project files are available together with a description of how to replicate the problem.

Hi Don

Well things change because I have turned the machine off........ o_O

My issue now is that I can select any of the terrain types and draw them. They appear to compile, without error messages, but any of the ORBX ones commencing with "FTX" do not show in the sim.

I have included the CVX.BGL and some pics, not sure if these are helpful tho.
Pic 1 shows the road as drawn and represented in TSPro.
Pic 2 shows the terrain type in the dropdown menu. TSPro indicates there is no texture, however it seems to do this for every terrain type in the drop down list including the built in generic types.

The coastline draws appropriately in the sim now, so not sure if I was doing something wrong. I have replicated the compiling and the coastline is fine, its just the road that doesn't draw.

I do not have project files as I am working with the existing CVX file each time and just import this as the project using the "Files" menu.

I hope this all makes sense.

Thanks again for your help

Andrew

The "no texture for this terrain" message (which is different from the message you described yesterday) is not exactly accurate. Roads, generally, use 5 or 6 textures; TS Pro can only show 1. It would have been more correct to display something along the lines of "This texture is not viewable".

That being said, the message you described yesterday has a completely different meaning and suggests there is , in fact, no texture defined in the Terrain.cfg file for that terrain. You'll have to check.

It's very difficult to determine the status from what you've sent. I suggest you recreate what you've done and Files/Save Project Data. (That's what I was referring to a the "project file") and post that file.

Thanks for your help Don

Its getting a little too complicated for me! I have managed to find ones that work for me so I am using those within the TSP addon list.

It looks as though the FTX textures are defined across 5 files hidden\buried within the ORBX subdirectories in FSX. As I don't know how to make this information appear in the terrain_FSX.cfg file and hence TSPro I am going to admit defeat and work with what I have.

Thanks again,

Andrew

You shouldn't have to. If ORBX has been installed properly, then there should be a bunch of ORBX terrain definitions ate the bottom of the FSX Terrain.cfg file. You need to substitute that file for the "stock" file supplied with TS Pro.

That being said, the learning curve for TS Pro (and for terrain generally) is fairly steep. If all you want to add is a couple road segment, its probably not worth the effort.

Thanks Don

Apart from this I have used TSPro to create\fix all types of terrain issues in the sim without any problems and its a great utility to have.

This has me stumped tho so I will heed your advice. It is only a couple of segments so those I can ignore.

Cheers
Andrew

DId you verify that the terrain.cfg file you are using actually specifies a texture. That's the first step in such situations

I absolutely agree and Don taught me a lot, although there are still questions :stirthepo :teacher:

as for your problem, first just save your project file this way:
I suggest you recreate what you've done and Files/Save Project Data. (That's what I was referring to a the "project file") and post that file.
I also have a ORBX to take a look at this;)

I looked at this, it's strange, my terrain name is not displayed despite the fact that all the necessary data is available in terrain.cfg, but only a guid displayed :

l Development Release 2.1.6.10
now it works well (the main thing is not to check the box to display not only the stock):

now it also displays textures for everything except third-party (non-stock) items, probably because these textures are stored outside the root folder of the sim:
