• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Using the FSX Compiler to make FS9 models???

Hey guys,

Could one possibly use the FSX compiler to make FS9 models??

What if you could take the base 2 MDL files from FSX and hex edit them into a FS9 model?

If FSX can export FS9 materials, can it also export FS9 animations?

What if the GUID's werent needed in a FS9 model. Can one create a program that would go through a MDL file and delete any and all GUID sets? A cleaner program of sorts? This would enable a faster model splicing/adaption.

Then one would need to create a 'base' MDL Notepad platform, then copy/paste the two model elements into the FS9 MDL platform template.

Man, I hope this works...... I sooooo need a better FS9 compiler.

Hi Bill,

Sorry, but the answer to your first question is no already. The FSX exporter can not make FS2004 MDL files. The internal structure of the MDL file has changed completely. So you can not change between the two by tweaking some bits.

Hey Arno,

No worries man. Fr. Bill already filled me in on the FS9 code being a 'Legacy' code and non compatible with FS9 from FSX.

rats....... :(

There must be a way to do this... I wonder where Constantine is? Didnt he make a compiler from scratch when he created FSDS? That thing, if memory serves correctly, could compile a model much faster then MakeMDL could.

Anyways.. Imagine the fantasy I had with such a possible way to make FS9 planes with the FSX super compiler. Burn a model, paste the code in a notepad, copy/paste for the second (interior), run it through a GUID deleter, put the headers on it, save as MDL file.. drop in FS9, fly!

What an exotic, erotic, incredible, wild, hot fantasy that was.... while it lasted... until Bill popped the bubble.. arrghh.

Hi Bill,

Before FSDS had its own compiler indeed, but since version 3 they moved to use MakeMDL and XtoMDL directly.

As we discussed in the other thread about this subject it is very well possible to make another compiler that works better. Especially for FS2004 where the MDL format gives us more flexibility to do things different from MakeMDL. But given the fact that FSX is here now, I don't think you can find anybody who is willing to invest so much time in a compiler for a version that is no longer the current version of the sim. 5 years ago or so it would have been a great idea, but now I feel it is time to move on to FSX.
