• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Using UVW Mapping & Unwarp UVW together

Hi Everyone,

I've a texture file which contains different parts of my building. I want to apply different parts of this texture to different parts of the building.
Now, when I apply the texture to object, all surface is applied with it. I use Unwarp UVW to specify the part of the texture to be applied. Bu then GMAX streches the image on the side.

How can I use Using UVW Mapping & Unwarp UVW together so that I can choose a part of the texture and apply it how much I want ?

First select the part. Then in poly sub-object select the poly you want to work on. Apply the UVW Map modifier. Work in the viewport that is most perpendiclar to the surface. Besure you have the Gizmo selected and click on View Align. Work with the X and Y size values as well as the Move tool till it close to the way you want it. If your texture is square, X and Y sizes should be equal. Once you have it positioned you can use the Unwrap tool to fine tune the map points. When that is done, collapse the stack and move on to the next poly/group of polys and repeat the above steps.

I must say that I use only the UVWMap mostly, I hardly use the Unwrap modifier. If you type in the coordinates when you are moving the gizmo you can also position it very accurate with the UVWMap modifier.

I guess this only works if you design your object a bit in a mathematical way (so that you know all sizes exactly), but that is how I work ;).

Hi,

I would like to thank you for your explanations. :)
But I did not managed to make it.

Maybe I did not explained my problem in clear way. Here is my problem in a clear way :
I have a texture file which contains different parts of building. Also I attached this texture here. Now I want to apply LowerRight part of this texture file on one face of box. I also want to tile lowerright part of this texture 2 times on U and V tiles.
I attached an image which I want to come at last. I made this sample, by using the lowerright part of this texture as a standalone, separate texture.

I know how to use Unwarp UVW and UVW Mapping seperate, I mean not together.

According to my knowledge I think, you use textures that will be applied to an object as standalone. I mean not mixed like the texture sample I attached.
So what is the best way of using textures ? To use standalone textures or one texture file that keeps all of parts ?

Ah, you can only tile the entire texture, so you can not take a part and tile that. If you tile it horizontal the entire width of the texture will be repeat (and the same holds for verticle tiling of course).

So if you want a part to be tiled, you can best make it as a separate texture.

Hi Arno,
Thank you for your fast reply. So :

As I understand from your explanation it is the best way to keep texture parts as separate :)

Again thank you for your help...
