• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

UV Mapping

Hi, I'm just hopping around looking at different 3D design programs. I use SketchUp the most, but am trying to broaden my abilities on other programs. I got the gist of GMax, ,(extruding, moving, slicing, boolean, etc). Now I'd like to apply textures. Do I have to design my textures first and then apply? Every tutorial I watch shows this technique. I'd much rather have the UV map made out into a image and then texture it on Gimp.

That looks long and difficult. Maybe I should stick with SketchUp. I'd like to get one of my SketchUp models animated to drive down ta street. I have no idea how to import SketchUp models with textures into GMax animate it and export it to use in FSX. I tried Blender, but I've been unsuccessful.

you can export a 3ds file from MCX and import in Gmax, but problably you have to apply the textures again. I can't remember what the process was, you would have to see into it.

When you start with GMax it IS long and difficult . It is not an easy program .
Good Luck

Hi,

You do not need to apply textures again with a 3DS conversion, but you do need to click the little blue and white cube in each material to make them display on the model. Since all of the polygons are exported "exploded", if you want any smoothing you do need to weld all the vertices and then smooth as desired.
