• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

FSX Vertices alignment question

Hi,

I have multiple vertices to move at a certain height on the Z axis, and I'm looking for a fast way to align them all in one move. Moving them one by one is very time consuming.

I have tried to do so by selecting all the vertices and using the absolute mode transform type-in, but this function seems to calculate an ''average'' Z coordinate for the group of vertices as a reference point before moving them. As a result, the vertices are moved, but they are still misaligned.

I have aslo tried the alignment button, with the same result.

Any suggestions ?

Does it not work to just select them and type in the new z value? That should do it.

One thing you can do is select them all and then down on the rollout you'll find a button marked "Make Planar", which will put them all on the same line, but as you mentioned, this function also seems to calculate a "mean average" of their positions and sometimes the resulting line of vertices will need to be rotated slightly. That isn't good enough for something like mirroring half of a fuselage where the centerline vertices must be at "0" on the X axis. If you can get away with them being "close to perfect" rather than "absolutely perfect" it might help you out.

Otherwise I know of no way to put them all precisely at absolute zero short of selecting each one individually and typing in the coordinates. I'll will be watching this thread in hopes that a guru will come in and tell us how to do it quickly and easily :) .

If I select an individual vertex and type in the Z value, it gets moved to the wanted position.

If I select many vertices that have different Z coordinates, they don't move relatively to their own Z coordinate, but instead relatively to some sort of average Z coordinate or pivot calculated by Gmax for the group of selected vertices.

For example, I have 3 vertices on the same X axe, and with respective Z coordinates of 0, 5 and 10. If I select all 3 vertices, the Z value showing in the Z window of the absolute mode is 5 (average of the 3 values). If I type in the Z value of 12 and press enter, Gmax calculates the difference between 12 and 5, and moves the vertices to the respective Z positions of 7, 12 and 17, just like in offset mode.

There is a small button next to the values that determines if the coordinates are absolute or relative. Maybe you need to toggle that button first. Then it should put them all at the value you enter.

If you mean the button that toggles between Abolute and Offset Mode Transform Type-In, I've tried all the combinations of select vertices/toggle with that button, with the same result.

To use my previous example, if I use the Offset Mode, the values displayed in the XYZ fields are all 0's, even after selecting the 3 vertices, obviously because that mode is not meant to display coordinates, but to enter a value in order to move all vertices by that value. In my case all I have to do is enter the value 7 in the Z field and I will obtain the same result that I would when entering the value 12 in the Z field in Absolute Mode.

The only solution I could find is selecting the vertices I want moved, then pressing the ''Restrict to Z'' button, then the ''Grid Align'' button, aligning all the vertices to 0 on the Z axe. Only then can I move them to the desired height, simply because they are already aligned relatively to each other.

The Absolute Mode Transform Type-In only works for multiple vertices if they are align on the same height, simply because the ''average'' Z coordinate gmax calculates is the same that the Z coordinate of each individual vertex.

The ''average'' value calculated by Gmax seems to be some sort of pivot point, because when I use the ''Select and Rotate'' button with the selected vertices, they rotate around that ''average'' coordinate.
