• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

War thunder - aircraft with incredible realism details...

Hi everybody,

just came across this combat simulator. But this simulator does not take my priority interest, but rather the aircraft - especially the Harrier.
These models are so unbelievable realistic in texturizing and details I have never seen so far in any flightsimulator.

So my questions:
- Does anybody know this sim?
- Does anybody know something about the models and with what programme they are designed with?
- Does anybody know if these models maybe can to be ported over to any other simulator?

I agree, these questions are questions of a ten years old boy with shiny eyes, so forgive me my excitement.....

I jump into WT occassionally to drive tanks.
Not at all interested in their aircraft since the flight modelling is somwhat questionable.
They use FM's to "balance the game experience" so don't expect anything close to real.
Didn't see anything extraordinary in the modelling quality either.
Solid models yes, but probably not exceptionally stunning.
As for modelling formats etc pp, you could look up their content developement kit in the wiki:

Thanks for the link, Mathias. The modelling, at least the exterior of the Harrier GR1/GR3 is extraordinary real at any rate (other aircraft of WT don't interest me in the slightest to be honest...).
In P3D, we (I) have to live since FSX with a truly malformed Harrier GR3 model by WILCO but the WT Harrier is top notch in all dimensions. It looks like a real Harrier.
We have tons and new announced more tons of deadly boring Cessnas, Pipers, 737 and furthermore lots of really good Spitfires and Mustangs - several F-14 and Tornado designers.
But Jaguars, Harriers, Westland Wessex, Lynx? Yes, brit aircraft, but to my opinion such important and interesting models to fly....
Why are people designing so many great aircraft for games but not for a flightsim? Strange and a pity....

Okay, in WT I was more interested in the WW2 warbirds initially, and the Harrier & VTOL game mechanic is a new addition from December 2020 so I can't really comment on that one.
As for where modellers put their energy, maybe it's because flightsims are dead for the broad range of "gamers"?
When you launch WT you see 50k - 100k users online at any given time of the day. I don't think MSFS and it's competitors combined reach those numbers offline.
We are a a dying species really, and MSFS probably won't change that.

I don't want to subscribe that MSFS will be moribund - there is a lot of potential, precisely because since a long time flightsim will be more attractive for younger users - partly because it is also designed for Xbox.
Experts told that FS9 was buried - it is still alive, a small membership of course, but living.
In comparison to games like DCS, WT or IL Sturmovic flightsim indeed is a "boring" game - you can't destroy anything but your own aircraft . FS is a game for older guys, and depending on how old these guys are, yes - we are a dying species :D:D:D

It's interesting looking at Steam stats. MSFS and FSX:SE together have about 7500 players online right now. WT has 32k. Counter Strike: Global Offensive has around 1 million players online. Flight simulation, with or without weaponry, is a very small player in the games world.

I agree - and a lot less using flightsim with military aircraft and AI traffic...None in MSFS so far, very bad topic ;).....
But I would not compare any usage - above all shooters with sim! And hey, as long as (freeware) enthusiasts will keep the sim(s) alive, I will stay optimistic.
There are a lot less modeller online, and much less slot car racer I think. And they all are happy by engaging their hobby.
I for one only hope that anytime my pray for a good Harrier or Westland helicopter will come true.

Shooters appeal to egos. Putting a piece of big iron down on the runway correctly does not. There you have it.

I wonder if you have tried DCS World or the Harrier in that Manfred? DCS World aircraft are modelled exceptionally well, and that goes for all of the modelling, the interior, exterior, sound, systems, flight dynamics. I don't have much experience with the DCS Harrier, althogh I have heard it is excellent. I do have a lot of experience with other DCS modules like the the A-10, F/A-18, Mig-15, F-86, Mirage and F-16, and I can attest that the systems modelling for all the DCS aircraft I have flown is exceptional. The VR experience for DCS World is also incredible, mainly due to the excellent performance and the high detail of the 3D cockpits.

The Harrier in DCS is the RAZBAM GR7 I also own in P3D. It's really good, also the VSTOL features works okay.
In my case, I like to fly all the former aircraft I did experience those days when I was young - that's above all the Harrier GR3 which was doing exercises in a training area nearby our hometown.
The heavies like Vulcan and Hercules, the Phantoms and the A-10 - don't forget the Chinooks landing right behind the farmer house 100 metres away.
All the sadly abandoned real airfields from the 80s which are now rotting like RAF Brüggen or RAF Gütersloh or many more...
All this we can bring back to live now in P3D.
But not in DCS, because DCS has no global coverage. This is the reason why it is always so difficult to explain why I don't need DCS to fly military aircraft - I am not very interested in destroying any targets or enemy aircraft, I am simply interested in getting the possibility to get the memories back.
Only really really really compelling module in DCS is the SuperCarrier - Man, this will be some time the DCS module I will buy for sure.....

FPS and flight simulations are both games of skill. 'Big iron' in a computer game (which is what XP, FSX/P3D Academic and MSFS are) is just as much of an ego-driven affectation as a big gun in an FPS is. The real skill in flight simulation is the stuff that the denizens of FSDev do, not what those who drive pixels do. On the other hand, the skill required and displayed by players in the big competitive shooter games is amazing - as is the work of the games designers.

I've spent 44 years and 20+ thousand hours of my life driving real-life 'big iron' (C130, B747, A330, A346). I now make (not very good!) flight sim scenery, and my daughter is an e-sports commentator on some of the major competitive games (Rainbow 6, Overwatch, CoD).

I for one only hope that anytime my pray for a good Harrier or Westland helicopter will come true.
Manfred, it is very rare to have the exact exterior model, flight model and realistic systems all combined on some machines as these are niche markets.
You were talking about helicopter simulation alone "Belsimtek" DCS to my knowledge represents this segment realistically. Of course this is only for the pleasure of piloting.
Personally, I really liked the DodoSim 206
