• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Weathervaning seaplanes

I am creating seaplane bases and would like to add some non-AI floatplanes that stay in one location. I would say static aircraft, except I don't want them to be static! I would like them to point into the wind, which is what real seaplanes do when at anchor. Ideas, anyone?

Hi,

If you have some objects, adding some tweak/condition to rotate it into the wind should not be too hard. I can give you some tips on that, once you have the model.

But I think finding a good model to use is the most difficult part. I have not seen that many static seaplanes before.

Hi Folks

Arno -
I'd also appreciate info on this, (for FSX please).

I've a number of anchored vessel models, (FPSO's),
which I'd like to have maintain a head-to-wind attitude,
(on my long-standing ToDo list).

There's two Wiki articles which would benefit from updating/rationalising.
Wiki - Rotate with wind
Wiki - Animation and wind rotation

I noticed some floatplanes in the FSX library. Could one of those be edited to rotate with wind?

I think none of this is possible in fsx. AfaIk there's no way of tweaking objects to rotate with wind in fsx, neither do we have the option to use drag forces by editing the sim.cfg to let them turn on the spot or roll in heavy winds.

You can also not use default objects because there's no way altering them. You'll have to create your own aircraft models.

You can still use FS2004 models in FSX. That's how I got custom windsock to my EEVI scenery.

Yes, FS2004 way is possible, but the problems begin if you want to use FSX materials, fsx simobjects, fsx AI...

Hello Paavo,

Hey could you elaborate on using FS9 objects? Do you know if I would need to build my own aircraft models to add this behavior?

Thanks

As I said before: If you want to tweak the object, i.e. rotat it by wind direction, animate it, change its appearance,... you need the source code - and since you won't have that you'll have to create your own models. Sorry. ;)

Agreed, it is not possible for FSX models. Best way is to design your objects with the FS2004 gamepack and then tweak the output as described on the Wiki.

Thanks for the initial directions guys,
Might be beyond my level of dedication, but if I get it to work, I will report back with a step-by-step.

This is an interesting thread... I would also like to get my own GMAX ships to turn into wind whilst at anchor in FSX. If anyone finds a way to do it please keep posting!

cheers

Andy

I experimented with AI Ships recently and I couldn't find a way to rotate them or do stuff you can do with AI Aircraft. For example they don't turn lights on and off or starting and shutting down engines. They only know one mode: go go go! :(

In this instance I only really mean static ships (i.e. at anchor) rather than AI. I was hoping they might weathervane like a windsock?

cheers

Andy

Well, yes they do - IF you model them yourself and tweak them like Arno indicated.
