• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

What spec should I upgrade to for smooth, nice FSX?

Hi guys,

My current PC spec is:

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 tweaked to hell
  • Asus P5E-E + Wireless Motherboard
  • Intel Quad Core Q6600 Processor
  • 4GB DDR-2 800 RAM
  • Nvidia 8800 GTS (640MB) Graphics
  • All disks SATA-II
  • 22" Widescreen Main Monitor (BenQ)
  • 17" Secondary Monitor (Generic Manufacturer)

FS9 is running pretty nicely at a locked 29fps, only occasionally dipping to 24 or 25 at heavy addon airports (I run ProjectAI, World of AI, and Ultimate GA at 100%% AI traffic).

But - FSX is pretty jerky at the default EGLL with the default B7474 and 20% AI traffic.

Given the above spec, and that I don't really want to get a *brand* new system, what should I upgrade to get a really nice smooth experience with various addons (ActiveSkyX, XGraphics, various Mega Airports, and PMDG and Wilco aircraft).

I'm guessing the processor should be upgraded to an quad extreme? How about the RAM? Would an upgrade really make a difference?

What about running drives as a RAID array to improve read performance? Would that make a noticable difference?

Many thanks!

Martin

Thanks for the info Lance.

The case that the PC is in is an Antec Studio Series Take 4 4U Rackmount case. That comes with a pretty huge fan... There is also a "Scythe Katana 2 Heatpipe Quiet Cooler" as the CPU cooler - which got a relatively good review for an air cooler on Techgage.

Never tried overclocking... Am willing to give it a go (and I know the P5K is good for it) but I'm a bit concerned about destroying my system!!

Cheers,

Martin

I believe your motherboard has the usual ASUS easy overclocking
in the BIOS. FSX is REALLY clock cycle hungry. Your Q6600 will
easily reach 3.0ghz. It's one of the best overclockers out
there. I can't help you with the voltage setting for a 3.0ghz
overclock. A Google search will find you the settings.

Your video card is a good one and along with a 3.0ghz overclock
FSX should be smoother. Notice I didn't say "smooth". I have
read about $8,000 computers build only for FSX that still see
some stuttering in FSX. MS will have to deal with performance
as the #1 design issue.

Thanks for the advice.

It does have easy overclocking. I have heard that the software overclocking (ie in Windows) is not the way to go, so I will look more into the bios.

Well I'm "developing" on FSX but still using FS9 for "pleasure"....

Cheers!

It looks to me like you have plenty of computer. Just start moving the sliders to the left until its smooth.

Amigo.....you have a PC to run FSX at Max!!!!!! and get at least 30fps everywhere!!!!!!FS9 at least 40fps!!!!

I have an off the shelf Acer 2 core and Nvidia 800GTS (340) and it never dips less then 18fps, and only in large cities. All sliders are MAX except for traffic and water......you got to do something there But not to the hardware!!!!!!!!:eek: you have something really bad going on!!!!!!...

I have FSX and Accellerator running.:)

Haha thanks Gera! I'm just in the process of doing a clean Vista 32 install and I'm going to give FSX another chance - I only gave it a couple of hours last time...

I want to start developing an addon myself, and I really want to do it in FSX (it will take over 12 months to develop and by that time FSX will be taking over), but it would be nice to have it running at least semi decently for now!
