• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Wheel and pedal for FSX

I do a lot of "driving" with my sim (mainly on my own airport designs), I've looked at some "racing wheels and pedals" with USB connections for PC. Now I do a lot of flying using my Logitech Extreme 3d Pro joystick which is great for flying, but, It don't work so great for driving. Most of the wheel and pedal setups I see have the pedals and wheel both with the USB connectors, my question is, can FSX use two controllers (Pedals and Wheel) that are plugged into two different USB ports? The problem I have with my joystick being used to drive with is the "twist" axis don't always "center" the steering wheel and needs constant correction when driving on straight roads, it always wants to drift to one side. I know of course there is always some drifting on actual cars and the sim is trying to emulate that, but this thing drifts a lot. It would just be easier to use a wheel for driving. Also I want to use pedals for my rudder controls instead of the buttons on the joystick. Also it would be nice to have elevator controls on the pedals too. Brakes, not too much of a problem. I would like to have "gas" and brake pedals for "driving". I have an old PS controller with the big wide connector, I can use it with a adapter for usb, but, the pedals are just an analog on/off switch and don't work too well for "gas" pedals. Also the wheel itself is also just on/off switches, all analog. I want to get a more up-to-date wheel and pedal combo, I just want to know if they are going to work since they are two separate controllers.

Hi Tom:

I have not tried the combination of driving controllers with a joystick, but the infrastructure of the Windows DirectX HID / USB system is accessible completely via FSX controller dialogs with the ability to map control onto more than (1) device at the same time.

In fact, because FSX tends to get its info from the Windows DirectX HID / USB system, it may automatically map more than (1) device with default settings that the gaming controller subsystem has used for years in multiple Windows versions, so you will have to go through all gaming controller map lists in FSX' GUI to edit those mapping you wish to change / delete anyway.

I have successfully had at least (2) controllers of various types connected to FSX in the past, and they can all be utilized.

Be aware that if a controller has ForceFeedback, when connected to FSX, something in the software interface to FSX may make FSX' slew behavior less controllable, and the user aircraft / ground vehicle may not stand still unless brakes are engaged, and it may also begin moving unexpectedly.

Also be aware that default gaming controller subsystem mapping may send the user aircraft / ground vehicle spinning if it has mapped a rotary dial such as Prop and/or Mixture on a HOTAS throttle etc., so you have to sort out those mapping to get the user aircraft / ground vehicle under 'control' before the sim is use-able with > 1 controller attached.

Although FSX does have a way to bring up the Windows Gaming "Calibrate" feature via its own menu system, one can separately open that gaming interface subsystem dialog box via:

Windows > Start > Run > JOY.CPL. ;)

Also, another way to bring up the Windows Gaming Controllers list in a dialog box is via:

Windows > Settings > Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers

That answers my question. I just wanted to make sure FSX was capable of utilizing more than one device at a time.
