• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Should I get 12 13 14.... I'm trying to get one that will act just like GMAX but I'm having trouble with the material editor in 15.

Thanks.

you have max2015, the export works fine with max2015, and you want to switch version$$$ because you can't work the material editor? If the problem is the slate material editor, you can toggle over to the more gmax like editor...just hold down the mouse while clicking on the material editor button, and you'll get the two options drop down.

There haven't been many changes in the material editor for years (I think slate was added in 2011).

I did have to study tutorials when I left Gmax for max, but it was worth it. No, you have the right max version...just google tutorials and learn max.

I have 2012 version but I got problems with it.
If I export the models, sometime I got error if I export a big model with lots of polygons. I need to shut it down and open it again.
Sometime my reference plane with satellite photo disappear, the plane just go to gray. No mater what I do, it stays the same. Need to shut down and reopen it.
Then I go back to Gmax. If my model is not complex, just only boxy buildings, I work on Gmax since it is more stable. Less resource requirement of Gmax.
But if the model is complex and need to make it in Max and use excellent Unwrap tool.
For model like aircraft, 3dsmax is a must.

Thank you for the input everyone. I have taken the time to read up on materials. 3DSMax is an amazing program I must say! I was going with some tutorials that they included but just to be sure, am I in the right direction in the case of FSX Material? Thanks.

Your using the Slate Editor. Even I find it complicated. ;) You should switch to the compact Material Editor as @bob5568 mentioned. Click help and search (material editor) for an explanation of how to toggle between the two.

To answer the question you asked, yes you should be using "FlightsimX" materials...

And just to provide a full spectrum of input, I LOVE the Slate Editor. I find it intuitive. With the compact editor, the difference between a "material", and a "texture" was never obvious. I suspect that's one reason why it seems so strange when we transition from GMAX. Anyway, tons of tutorials on both. Enjoy!

as I was thinking about this, I was reminded of the difference between understanding the path in Windows for a file, and knowing that same path under DOS. With DOS, you could receive a fine directory of a folder, but the folders above and below the level you are on are pretty hidden. You can explore, and find stuff, but its not infront of you. When windows came out, you could see the entire map in Windows explorer. Made it much easier.

With compact editor, I often sought some control, only to need to rise up a layer in the organization stack. With Slate, its all in front of me.

Interesting! That's what I use the Material Navigator for in both Max 2008 (Slate-free) and Gmax. Maybe some day...

I will just "hijack" this thread ;-)
As 3DSmax 2012 was not able to export correct X-files from any non-English version does anyone know if this is still the case with 3DSMax 2014/2015/2016?
