• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Win 7 3DS Max 9 SDK issue

Hi,

A friend sent me his .max source scenery models he started back then with 3DS Max 9 on his Win XP. I have Win 7 and I could not find a way to make 3DS Max 9 find the SDK despite the many things I tried using tips and hints online...

All I need is to export from 3DS to MDL and that is the issue, 3DS can't find the SDK installed...

I tried another option, to export to .3DS format and use Gmax to finish the models, texturing and export in MDL. I could load the converted .3DS format in GMAX but the whole material links are lost, that means the models are all black and no bitmaps in the materials browser/editor

Any idea please?
Cheers
Michel

The only issue with installing the SDK is the folder selection bug.

Edit the .ini file manually, or use the same technique as is used for adding scenery folders under Win 7

Thank you all for the tips.

But I have already followed a tutorial on editing the Ini file and I had placed the right path to the last level (plugin) for MAX9 in the SDK

Yet despite this manual editing, the MDL exported is still not recordnized (SDK not found)...

Cheers

The only issue with installing the SDK is the folder selection bug

A small suggestion:-
Navigate to the plugins folder and select a file in the folder - like XToMdl.exe. Then click "Use Path".
Works for me in Max 2008

Thanks allot for all your input on the issue, I could finaly solve the problem by re-installing the SDK from the disks to the default location and re-link to it in 3DS9 using the trick of naviagating in the plugin folder and then clicking once on one of the files there. This allows 3DS under Win7 to recognize the whole path (i.e: with the /plugin) at the end.

Known limitations:

- from 3DS Max9 we can only export in .X format (not MDL)
- One should use the XtoMDL in the Max7 plugin folder and not Max9 under Win7 in order to compile the .X file

Cheers

Perhaps you needed to run configsdk.exe from within the SDK to configure the non-default location.

The only issue with XtoMdl.exe file is that they apparently forgot to sign the one in the 3DSM9 folder.
Copy the other one over it, or set it to run with elevated priveledges.
