• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Wondering what I am missing???

Hi All,

Sorry if I am bringing up an old topic but I have been doing my research, multiple tests and trials, and still cant figure this out...

I have a new machine and just upgraded to Win 10, 4.0ghz 8-core FX 8350 processor, AMD 7570 4GB graphics card, 16gb ram ect...

So I installed all of the MAIW packages and they were working great until I realized I could not see any default AI Traffic... So my quest began I made sure my sliders were all the way up... added a line to FSX.cfg about disabling preload, Installed AIFP, ran the converter to convert the fs9 to fsx bgl files... Didnt fix my problem.. then ran the restore portion of the FSX DVD, which gave me the CTD g3d.dll issue which caused me to reinstall my FSX...

So FSX back running... I removed the disable preload, reinstalled the old bgl files, sliders full... which caused the default AI to disappear again... Then I realized the FS9 bgls although replicated as FSX bgls were not removed from my Scenery\world\scenery file... So I hand removed them and left the FSX bgls... Now I have my default AI back but the MAIW stuff is gone I go to any of my military airports and where I used to see ramps full of Tomcats, Blackbirds, U-2s, Hornets....ect. ect. ect... The ramps are now empty only what look like shadows or oil stains in the tarmack are left guessing just FSX intended texturing... So what have I not done? or what am I missing and how to do I fix it? Thanks

Presumably, the MAIW traffic was in the fS9 files you removed. I suggest you convert the MAIW files to FSX format. (AIFP will do a bulk convert for you.) While converting the FSX default traffic file to FS9 format is possible, you'd lose the FSX-only airports.

As noted in one of the stickys, (and as you've already discovered) FSX will display both FS9 and FSX traffic - but not at the same time. If you try to use both, you'll likely only see FS9 traffic. SO, make all you traffic files FSX format.

Hi Don,

I did do that... I think I did it correctly... The new files had the same name as the old ones except _FSX was now at the end of the file name.... I then moved the old ones without the _FSX out of the scenery directory... Is there some way of checking this?

Run a check for other FS9 files. It only takes one to kill all your FSX files.
Don

Will AIFP do that or is there another program I need...? At the moment all my FSX files are not killed the default AI works but MAIW is gone...

So I ran the compiler again... This time I decided to do everything in separate files away from FSX so as to avoid any admin access issues... The generated reports for all the bgls I tried to convert looked like this:

All the aircraft are where they have always been under my simobjects\airplanes or simobjects\rotorcraft folders to my understanding a bgl file calls an aircraft by title in the aircraft.cfg folder anyway... but the fs9 bgls that I straight up installed previously were able to call on the aircraft this way regardless....

C:\Users\****Documents\converted traffic\Traffic MBAI SR71_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_48th FW RAF Lakenheath_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_ACG_CY_GATE_GUARDS_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_Beale CAP_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_Beale KC-135_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_Beale MC-12W_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)
C:\Users\****\Documents\converted traffic\Traffic_Beale QR-4A_FSX.bgl (contained unused airports/aircraft which were not processed)

Not sure what you are asking. If you still are not seeing the FSX default traffic, then you most likely have a FS9 file lurking somewhere. AIFP will look for it, but you have to direct the search. FSX will always look in Simobjects for AI aircraft - irrespective of whether the traffic file is compiled for FS9 or FSX - unless of course, you tell it to look somewhere else in the FSX.cfg file.

Ok let me try to break this down...

My original problem:

Had militaryaiworks (MAIW) fs9 bgls installed
MAIW traffic worked perfectly
default AI disappeared

ran through process, converted fs9 bgls to fsx, put fsx bgls in scenery\world\scenery, removed old fs9bgls and stored in alterenate location on my hard drive, ect.ect.ect.

My current problem:

Default AI now working / visible
MAIW now disappeared / gone / military airports went from full to blank ramps...

My desired end state:

Both default AI and MAIW working and present simultaneously

What am I doing wrong / what am I missing / how do I get there?

Also to answer your other question no I have not changed any FSX.cfg file locations... Really I all I did was run the AIFP bgl converter...

I assume you didn't place the FS9 .bgls anywhere that FSX can "see" them.

Have you scanned ALL enabled scenery folders and Scenery\world\scenery for an elusive FS9-formatted traffic file?

This appears to be a classic FS9/FSX traffic file issue. It's got nothing to do with AIFP or FSX. Only you can ensure there are no FS9 files that FSX can "see".

I'll be travelling very shortly and unable to continue this thread. Perhaps someone else can jump in if you are still having problems.

Well the new folder I created was under the "my documents" in windows... So I'm hoping that's far enough away... I looked at the owlsnest .pdf and have begun trying to dissect my addonscenery folder under fsx... Since I installed all of the MAIW packages as you can imagine this will probably take me forever... (thousands of files) Sadly since I have a full time job plus a newborn and am finishing my PhD (God willing I get to walk next year) my time is very limited... While I'm good at doing research and fixing problems my "hobby" time is very limited... So I'm hoping someone can help me here... Really I hope at some point MAIW comes out with FSX bgls since lets face the facts FS9 hasn't existed 2006 or earlier... but just my very humble opinion...

Really not to sound mean and excuse me if there is some sort of (code or programming) ignorance on my part... But wondering who didn't swallow the $50, 11 years ago and didn't buy FSX??? and if so beyond being cheap why??? Sorry for the very frustrated venting...

It doesn't matter where you create the folder. What matters s that it's not referenced in the Scenery Library.

Have you done a search for any other FS9-formatted files. I'd put money that that's the cause of your difficulty.

Don

I still fly FS2004 because I can have 100% AI traffic at KJFK with little reduction in frame rate, and I have created dozens of FS9 sceneries that MS said were going to be compatible with FSX and turned out they weren't. Don't want to do all that work again for a sim that gives me very little over FS9 (eye candy and flight dynamics are fine in FS9; the few extras I would like are not worth the extra effort). There are many of us still out there...

Try temporarily removing all of your MAIW traffic BGL files to your removed folder (or a subfolder you create within that), and see if your default traffic comes back. If so, put back half of the MAIW files and see if the default traffic goes away. If it does go away, remove half of those files back to the subfolder and test again. If the default traffic DOES appear, then place those files into a folder called FILES_OK (or similar). Keep doing this with the removed files until you have found the culprit. Divide and conquer.

Hope this helps,

May I suggest there may be one FS9 traffic file lurking somewhere in your FSX, not in Scenery/World/Scenery, but rather in a MAIW or non MAIW scenery folder ?

Traffic file names doesn't have to start with the "Traffic_" prefix. They just have to end with the ".bgl" extension to get loaded by FS. What if someone failed to name a traffic file using that convention, and put it in an addon scenery folder..?

By the way, Tom Gibson explained how to find the file causing the issue. Start with bgls that are known to be traffic files; it seems you did succeeded in bringing back default traffic. The offending file is among the ones you removed at that time.

It is what Tom said about a rouge file. Happened to me. I find that most any MAIW or AI that says it is ready for FSX is not.
This is what I found in the manual and it worked for me.

Section 8.4
"Finding FS9 Traffic Files on a FSX System – When FSX “sees” both compiledfor-FS9 traffic files and compiled-for-FSX traffic files, the FS9 traffic will be
displayed normally; however, the FSX traffic is usually suppressed. This
situation will exist until the very last FS9 traffic file has been located and either
disabled or converted for FSX operation (see next section).
To locate FS9 traffic files, click on the Files / Find FS9 Traffic Files menu item.
As in the previous section, this opens a directory-tree from which you may select
any combination of folders and files to be searched. You will then be presented
with the list of FS9 traffic files found together with an option to convert and/or
delete one or more of those files If all you wanted was a list, click the No button.
Otherwise, select the files you wish to convert or delete and click the Yes button.
If you elect to delete files, AIFP will seek confirmation prior to deleting them.
If you want the file(s) converted, you’ll first be asked if you want it/them deleted
following conversion. The conversion process itself is identical to that in the
previous section. However:

the converted file(s) will be placed in the same folder as its/their FS9
counterpart,
the FSX file name(s) will be suffixed with “_FSX”, and
if you chose not to delete the FS9 file(s) following conversion, its/their file
name will be suffixed with “_FS9“ (if it isn’t already)"
